RE: Trimming window openings without wrecking your walls
Tight corners with no caulk? In my dreams, maybe. I’ve been working on a 1920s bungalow and honestly, I think the original builders just eyeballed half this stuff. You shim one side and suddenly your trim’s doing the lim...
RE: Anyone else tried those layered sheer shades?
Couldn’t agree more. I spent ages lining mine up, only to realize my cat’s fur sticks to the bottom edge anyway. At this point, if it keeps the draft out and the bill down, I’m calling it a win.
RE: That time I learned the hard way that “dry heat” isn’t always better
Yeah, I hear you on the window film hassle. I swear, half my spring cleaning is just scraping off that sticky stuff and cursing past-me for putting it on in the first place. Sealing up the house can be a bit of a double-...
RE: Swapping single pane for double: worth the hype?
I hear you on the condensation - double panes are definitely better, but they’re not magic. I had a similar thing after swapping mine out. Less drafty, but still got some fog when the humidity spiked (thanks, Midwest win...
RE: Keeping the cold out: DIY window hacks for off-grid living
Magnetic acrylic panels are slick, but my wallet cries every time I look at the price tag. I’ve tried rope caulk too - on my 1920s windows it’s like trying to hide a garden hose with a bit of paint. Has anyone messed aro...
RE: How tricky is it to make a window bigger?
Yeah, I’ve run into that “creative” framing a few times - makes you wonder if the builder was in a rush or just didn’t care. When I tried to make my dining room window bigger, I found some old newspaper wadded up where i...
RE: Regretting My ReliaBilt Choice? Long-Term Durability Woes
Gotta nudge back a bit here - when I swapped out my old aluminum sliders for new vinyl (not ReliaBilt, but similar price point), my winter gas bill actually dropped more than I expected. Maybe it’s just that my originals...
RE: Finally got those dingy window frames looking new again - anyone else have a cleaning win?
Yeah, I got suckered by the “crystal clear forever” label too. Mine’s got this amber tint now - makes the living room look like a sepia photo after 3pm. At least the frames aren’t sticky anymore, but I’m not sure if I wo...
RE: Anyone tried switchable glass for skylights? Worth the upgrade?
I get what you mean about the draft thing - had a similar situation in my old place. Installer swore up and down everything was tight, but turns out he missed a spot near the frame. Ended up fixing it myself with some we...
RE: City noise driving me nuts - soundproof curtains or acoustic windows?
Yeah, that window thing tripped me up at first. I made my own inserts last fall - just some acrylic sheets with weatherstripping - and the noise drop was wild. But man, taking them out every time I wanna air out the plac...
