How tricky is it to make a window bigger?

I know that feeling—my house is from the late 40s and nothing lines up the way it should. When I cut out for a bigger window in my dining room, I swear the studs were doing their own thing. I ended up having to shim more than I expected just to get the new header level. Definitely agree, if you’re even a little unsure about what’s load-bearing, it’s worth getting someone who knows their stuff to check. The dust and random surprises behind those walls are just part of the fun... or headache, depending on the day.

Man, I hear you on the studs—sometimes it feels like they just tossed them in wherever they felt like back then. I’ve opened up walls and found everything from old newspapers to random bits of wire just hanging out in there. Getting a header level in these older places is basically an Olympic sport. And yeah, you never really know what’s load-bearing until you start poking around... I’ve seen folks get away with “it looks fine,” but that’s a gamble I’m not willing to take. The dust is a given—just hope you don’t find any squirrel nests like I did once.

Yeah, opening up old walls is like a box of surprises... I once found a glass Coke bottle wedged between studs, no idea why. Structurally, though, it’s wild how inconsistent the framing is. I always end up triple-checking with a laser level and still don’t trust what I see. The unpredictability is half the challenge—and honestly, sometimes half the fun.

Man, I totally get what you mean about the framing—my last reno, I swear the studs were spaced by someone eyeballing it after a few drinks. The weirdest thing I found was a handful of old insulation that looked like it was stuffed in with a stick. But yeah, the unpredictability is kind of fun, especially when you’re trying to make things more airtight or add better windows. Always makes me double-check my air sealing after I open things up, just in case there’s a random gap or cold spot hiding back there.

Yeah, I’ve run into that “creative” framing a few times—makes you wonder if the builder was in a rush or just didn’t care. When I tried to make my dining room window bigger, I found some old newspaper wadded up where insulation should’ve been. Cutting the opening wasn’t too bad, but getting the new header in with all those wonky studs took way longer than I expected. I always end up chasing drafts after, too… seems like there’s always some weird pocket of cold air hiding out behind the trim.
