Anyone else tried those layered sheer shades?

I’ve actually dealt with this in my last place, which was a 1950s ranch with those classic single-pane windows. I tried the plastic film kit one winter because the drafts were brutal, and I did exactly what you described—put up sheers in front to try and pretty it up. You’re right, the sheers don’t really hide the crinkly look unless you’re not that fussy. My wife noticed it right away, but I figured it was better than freezing.

About condensation—yeah, that’s what finally made me stop using the film. The windows would sweat like crazy on cold mornings, especially in the rooms where we kept the doors closed at night. I’d get little puddles on the sills, and a couple times I noticed some mold starting on the wood trim. Not a huge deal if you stay on top of it, but it was enough hassle that I just started budgeting for storm windows instead.

I think it depends a lot on how tight your windows already are and how much humidity you’ve got inside. Our house was always a bit damp in winter, so that probably made it worse. I’ve heard some folks run a dehumidifier, but honestly, I didn’t want another thing plugged in all day.

Curious if anyone’s found a better way to make the plastic less obvious, though. I never really figured that part out. Maybe there’s a trick I missed?

You’re not alone—those plastic kits are tough to disguise, especially in daylight. I’ve tried smoothing them out with a hairdryer, but even then, the glare and texture just kind of stand out. Honestly, budgeting for storm windows is the right call if you can swing it. They’re a bigger investment up front, but once they’re in, you skip all the yearly hassle and condensation headaches. The film is really just a stopgap, and it sounds like you got about as much mileage out of it as possible.
