Anyone tried those see-through solar windows for their home?

I keep seeing ads for these new windows that supposedly generate electricity, but I’m skeptical about how much power you actually get. Is it even worth the hassle and cost to swap out regular windows for these? If you’ve installed them, did you notice any real difference in your energy bills, or is it just a cool gimmick?

Yeah, I’ve seen those ads too and had the same “is this for real?” reaction. I actually got a couple of the solar window panels put in last fall—just in the living room, not the whole house. Here’s the thing: they do generate some juice, but don’t expect to power your whole house or anything wild like that. It’s more like a trickle that helps offset a bit of your bill, but honestly, my energy statement didn’t suddenly drop like a rock.

The install was a bit of a pain, mostly because my house is older and nothing’s quite square. The tech is cool, though—my neighbor keeps asking if I’m running some kind of secret lab over here. I’d say if you’re already planning on replacing your windows and you’re into gadgets, it’s a fun upgrade. But if you’re hoping for a massive ROI, eh... maybe not quite there yet. Still, it’s a conversation starter when folks come over and see the setup.

Stacking panels on every window sounds good in theory, but you’ll probably run into diminishing returns. The tech just isn’t there yet for high output, and you start sacrificing natural light fast. I’ve seen folks regret losing that daylight, especially in less sunny climates. It’s a tradeoff, honestly.

- Agree with the daylight issue—swapping out too many windows for solar ones can make rooms feel dim, especially north-facing.
- From installs I’ve done, output is decent but not game-changing. You won’t run your AC off just these.
- Upfront cost is higher than standard glass, and payback takes a while unless you’ve got prime sun exposure.
- Maintenance isn’t much different, but repairs are pricier if something goes wrong.
- If you’re after a noticeable drop in bills, rooftop panels still give more bang for your buck right now.

Yeah, I’m with you there. I looked into these when we replaced our front windows last fall. The idea is cool, but the room definitely felt darker in the demo house. My neighbor did a couple on his sunniest side, and he said it’s a nice bonus but nothing life-changing—you’re not going off-grid or anything. Honestly, the extra cost made me pause. Maybe in a few years when the tech improves? For now, regular rooftop panels seem to make more sense if you’ve got the space.

That’s been my impression too. I did a deep dive into the specs last year, and the efficiency numbers just aren’t there yet compared to traditional panels.

—I’ve wondered about that, especially since we rely on passive solar for winter heating. Did anyone see long-term data on how much these windows actually generate per square foot? I’m curious if the payback period is even close to rooftop panels. The tech is promising, but right now it feels a bit like paying extra for a novelty.

I keep circling back to that same question—does the math ever really work out? I looked into these see-through solar windows a while back because, honestly, the idea is pretty cool. But when I compared the numbers, even the optimistic estimates were way behind what you’d get from a regular rooftop setup. I remember one manufacturer claiming maybe 10 watts per square meter under ideal conditions... which sounded decent until you realize how little that adds up to over a year.

The other thing that bugged me was the light loss. We’ve got big south-facing windows for winter sun, and I’m not keen on sacrificing that for a few extra kilowatt-hours. If you’re in a hot climate and want less sunlight inside anyway, maybe it’s a win, but here in Vermont, every bit of sunshine counts in January.

Unless prices drop or they figure out how to boost efficiency without turning your living room into a cave, I’m sticking with panels on the roof. Has anyone actually seen real-world payback numbers? All I’ve found are marketing slides and best-case scenarios...

You’re not alone—those numbers just never penciled out for me either. I did a spreadsheet last winter, mostly for fun, and even with the most optimistic efficiency figures, it was barely a blip on the electric bill. I totally get your point about winter sun, too. Up here in Maine, losing passive heat from sunny windows would mean more oil in the tank. Maybe for a glass office tower in Phoenix it’s different, but for a house in the Northeast? Roof panels seem way more practical right now. Maybe in ten years they’ll crack the code...

The transparency is decent, but you lose a lot of passive solar gain in winter, which means higher heating costs. The panels themselves didn’t generate enough to offset that loss, even on clear days. For now, standard roof panels outperform them by a mile up here. Maybe in a few years if efficiency jumps, but right now I’d stick with the tried-and-true options.
