RE: Lower U-Factor or Lower SHGC: Which Glass Package Fits Your Climate?
The orientation-by-orientation comparison is useful, but make sure the numbers being compared are for the complete NFRC-rated window assembly, not glass-only values. A frame with more conductive material, or a less effec...
RE: Noise, dust, and drafts: city window upgrades worth it?
That lines up with my experience, honestly. I’ve lived in a 1920s brick house for decades, and while window inserts can help a bit with noise, I found they didn’t do much for dust or drafts unless the original windows we...
RE: Things I wish I’d known before swapping out my old windows
Funny how the bedroom always ends up being the noisiest spot. I went with double pane too - mostly for energy efficiency - but honestly, the sound insulation wasn’t quite what I hoped. Triple pane’s price is a gut punch,...
RE: Worth it to cap old wood windows with aluminum or nah?
I’ve always figured capping is only as good as what’s underneath, too. I did aluminum wraps about a decade ago on my 1950s windows, but found some hidden rot once I started poking around. Ended up replacing a couple sill...
RE: Anyone tried those see-through solar windows for their home?
Yeah, I’ve been keeping tabs on these solar windows too. I looked into them a couple years back when we were thinking about replacing some of our original 80s double-panes. The numbers just didn’t work for me either. Eve...
RE: Tips for taking out old windows without wrecking your walls?
That’s a solid tip with the painter’s tape - I’ve nicked trim more than once, especially when I was in a hurry. I’ll admit, I was skeptical about laminate shims at first, but after a few splinters and split wood, I switc...
RE: How much time did you spend replacing your windows?
I ran into the same issue with air leaks when I did mine - those old sashes just weren’t cutting it anymore. In my case, the original wood was beautiful but so far gone that patching felt like a losing battle. Ended up s...
RE: Cheap tricks for keeping car windows clear in the morning
Honestly, I’ve got to push back a bit on the idea that “the cheap tricks just end up being extra chores.” Maybe it’s my old-school habits, but I’ve had decent luck with a mix of those so-called hacks. For instance, leavi...
RE: Getting bids vs. going with a recommended window installer - what works better?
That’s a solid approach - doing your own homework really does pay off. I’ve owned three homes over the years, all built in different decades, and honestly, the variance in workmanship between crews (even from the same co...
RE: Thinking about privacy glass for home windows - worth the hype?
Privacy glass can be handy, but honestly, thermal curtains have always done the trick for me. Plus, curtains let you adjust airflow and insulation easily... privacy glass feels a bit too permanent (and pricey) for my lik...
