RE: Printing custom window latches: what worked for me
I hear you on the old wood - mine’s early 70s, and it’s like the stuff just wants to turn to dust every time I touch it. Oversized screws helped for a while, but eventually I had to use those metal screw anchors you’d us...
RE: Swapping single pane for double: worth the hype?
Double panes definitely help, but I’d argue air sealing and insulation actually give you more bang for your buck, especially in older homes. Swapping windows is pricey and you might not see a huge drop in your bills unle...
RE: Figuring out the right depth for porch covers when the sun won’t sit still
I used the calculator method too - honestly, it’s more reliable than guessing. My overhang is 30" now, and the difference in summer heat was noticeable, but winter sun’s still decent. The math isn’t fun, but it beats red...
RE: Swapping out window hinges: do you go solo or call in the pros?
I’d actually push back a bit on the idea that you’re always fighting a losing battle if the frame’s swollen. It depends how bad it is. I’ve dealt with a few windows in my 70s-era place where the wood had some swelling, b...
RE: Curtains, blinds, or shades - how do you pick what actually fits your room?
I get the appeal of linen curtains, but I’ve found they don’t always block enough light, especially in rooms that get blasted by afternoon sun. In my place (built in the 70s), I ended up going with cellular shades - more...
RE: Keeping the cold out: DIY window hacks for off-grid living
I’ve had similar luck with the magnetic panels - fine for a quick improvement, but they just don’t hold up over a full winter, especially once the wind starts howling. Custom wood storms are more work, but I agree they’r...
RE: Swapping out old windows in humid weather - worth it?
I’d agree with that - there’s a noticeable difference in comfort, even if the humidity issues don’t totally disappear. For me, the real value was ditching the storm windows and dealing with less draft in winter. The cond...
RE: Dreaming up the ultimate smart window features
That’s a familiar story. I’ve had my share of “smart” gadgets that turned out to be more trouble than they were worth - especially once the batteries or sensors start acting up. Honestly, sometimes the tech just adds ano...
RE: Swapping out old windows to beat the summer heat - worth it?
I’ve been in the same spot - spent a chunk on new windows thinking it’d solve my summer cooling issues. Helped a bit, but honestly, the real difference came after I beefed up attic insulation and tracked down air leaks a...
