RE: Double-hung sash slides back down before it’s fully open
A useful clue is whether the resistance changes with the sash’s position. Binding may make it catch or feel harder to move at a particular point, while a weak balance can let it travel fairly smoothly but fail to hold it...
RE: What caulk actually keeps drafts out for good?
I totally get what you mean about the elastomeric stuff. My first attempt at sealing up our drafty old sash windows was a mess - acrylic just peeled right off after one winter. Elastomeric’s been better, but I’ve noticed...
RE: Trimming window openings without wrecking your walls
That “springy” trim thing is way too familiar. I tried to fix up the windows in our 1950s ranch last fall, and nothing lined up - like, not even close. I started off thinking shims would be my savior, but I ended up with...
RE: How do I replace my windows without falling down the stairs?
I totally get what you mean about the walls - mine are more like gentle waves than anything straight. I tried one of those flexible caulk tools too, but honestly, I just ended up smearing caulk everywhere except where it...
RE: What surprised you when taking out old vinyl windows?
When I pulled out the old vinyl windows in my place (built in ‘82), I half expected to just see insulation and studs, but nope - there was a random plastic toy car wedged in there, like someone’s kid lost it decades ago....
RE: Fixed my drafty windows for under $20 - anyone else surprised how easy it was?
That’s probably what’s going on with mine. I tried the tape/film thing last winter and, yeah, it peeled up some paint chips. Didn’t realize that could actually make things worse for drafts down the line. The rope caulk i...
RE: Anyone else notice the greenish tint on new energy-efficient windows?
That’s wild, I thought we were the only ones! We just moved in and the first thing we did was replace the windows - figured it’d be a big win for energy bills. Now half the time our living room looks like it’s underwater...
RE: Does Painting Old Aluminum Window Frames Actually Hold Up Over Time?
Funny timing, I just moved into a place with those old silver frames and was all set to paint them up this spring. Now I’m second-guessing if it’s worth the hassle. I keep hearing that no matter how careful you are, wint...
RE: Modern Window Upgrades in Old Houses: Worth the Trade-Off?
That’s interesting to hear about the pulleys still working so well. I’m still figuring out what to do with the windows in my 1920s place - most of them are original, and honestly, I kind of like all the wavy glass and we...
RE: Why does fixing a single window cost so much?
That’s exactly what happened to me this spring. I thought it’d be a quick fix - just needed to stop a draft in the living room window. Ended up learning way more about window parts than I ever wanted to. Couldn’t find a ...
