RE: Do replacement glass quotes spell out tempered or laminated glazing?
“Whether the location requires safety glazing” is the key qualifier: the applicable requirement depends on the opening’s location and configuration, not simply on whether a quote lists tempered or laminated glass. Glazin...
RE: Anyone else tried those layered sheer shades?
I get what you mean about the layered sheers not being the magic fix for cold drafts. I tried something similar a couple of years back - wanted that soft filtered light, especially during those gray winter days, but yeah...
RE: GEAR THAT SAVED MY BUTT DURING WINDOW SWAP - WHAT’S YOUR CAN’T-LIVE-WITHOUT?
I hear you on the suspenders - mine hooked on a door latch once and nearly yanked me flat. Belts are just less drama, honestly. As for knee pads, I’ve tried a few and still end up with sore spots, but they’re better than...
RE: How I Broke Down the Costs for New Windows Without Losing My Mind
Yeah, I’m with you on this - some things just feel safer to keep in hard copy. I had a buddy who tried to claim a warranty on his windows with just a scan and the company gave him the runaround for weeks. It’s wild how p...
RE: Why sealing windows near the ocean is trickier than you’d think
I’ve wondered the same. Honestly, I think the “overkill” approach is the only thing that’s worked for me so far - layers of flashing, high-end caulk, and making sure there’s a proper sill pan under every window. I tried ...
RE: Quieting down city noise: which window upgrades actually work?
We did the triple-pane in our bedroom last fall, mostly because the street out front is a circus at night. Honestly, the difference over double-pane is there, but it’s not mind-blowing - maybe a bit quieter, and it defin...
RE: Keeping the cold out: DIY window hacks for off-grid living
I’ve tried the magnetic storm kits on two windows last winter - honestly, they’re decent for quick removal, but I noticed a slight draft around the edges if you don’t get them lined up just right. Still, they beat wrestl...
RE: Anyone actually notice a difference with krypton-filled windows?
I get where you’re coming from, but I actually did notice a pretty clear drop in street noise after swapping to krypton. My house faces a main road, so maybe it’s just my setup, but the difference was more than just subt...
RE: Quick tricks for holding a cracked window together?
I get why folks go for plexiglass, but honestly, I’ve had better luck with just screwing a thin plywood board over the frame from the inside. It’s not see-through, but if you’re dealing with a big crack and bad weather, ...
RE: Saved my living room window with a DIY crack fix - anyone else surprised by how well those kits work?
I’ve used those patch kits a couple times, and honestly, they’re decent for small stuff - like hairline cracks or chips. But once you’ve got a bigger crack or any flex in the glass, they’re really just a stopgap. I had o...
