RE: Clerestory Windows or Skylights: Which Brings in Better Light (and Less Hassle)?
Our place has north-facing clerestory windows in the living room and honestly, I think it makes a pretty big difference. The light is softer and more even throughout the day, but you don’t get those dramatic sunbeams lik...
RE: Surprised to Learn Simonton Offers 0% Financing? Here’s What I Found
Yeah, I’ve noticed they’re way quicker to throw in a “premium handle” or whatever than actually shave dollars off the bottom line. I once asked about a longer warranty and the guy acted like I’d asked for his firstborn. ...
RE: Finding the Sweet Spot: Balancing Window Size and Home Efficiency
I’ll admit, when we did our addition, I thought the low-e windows were just another upsell. Turns out, they actually made a difference - our living room used to feel like a greenhouse in July, but now it’s just “warm” in...
RE: Anyone actually notice a difference with krypton-filled windows?
Heavy curtains definitely aren’t for everyone. We tried them in our bedroom years ago - felt like we were prepping for a solar eclipse every night. Ended up using draft stoppers and some caulk like you mentioned, and it ...
RE: How I spotted a shady window installer (and what tipped me off)
That’s classic. I had a guy once tell me my house “needed argon gas for optimal performance.” Didn’t even look at the windows first. My place is from the 40s, and nothing is standard size - half the windows are practical...
RE: Built-in blinds in windows: Worth it or just a hassle?
Ha, I totally get what you mean about the “sweet spot” - I swear mine have a mind of their own. Sometimes I just leave them halfway and call it “ambiance.” Not having to dust each slat is honestly the main reason I put u...
RE: CHOOSING BETWEEN MARVIN AND OLD INTEGRITY WINDOWS – ANY REGRETS?
Honestly, after swapping to Marvin (not the Integrity line), my heating bill dropped a bit, but not as dramatically as I’d hoped. My house is old and stubborn - still finds ways to leak air. The seals are tight though, a...
RE: Why do my smart window sensors keep disconnecting?
I stuck some foam spacers behind mine last winter when the window paint started peeling and the sensors wouldn’t sit flush. Honestly, I didn’t notice a huge battery drain, but I did have one sensor that kept bugging out ...
RE: Window letting in cold air - any quick fixes?
Yeah, shrink-wrap kits are surprisingly solid - I was skeptical at first too, thought they'd look like cling wrap on leftovers, lol. But honestly, once they're tightened up, you hardly notice them and the room feels way ...
RE: Rain sneaking in around my window - caulk or weather stripping?
Haha, silicone strips always end up looking like a kindergarten art project when I do them. One thing that sorta helped me was using painter's tape on either side of where the strip goes. Lay down the silicone, smooth it...
