RE: IF YOU COULD UPGRADE YOUR WINDOWS TO A DIFFERENT GAS, WOULD YOU GO FANCY OR STICK WITH BASIC?
I’ve always stuck with argon in my own place, even though the idea of “fancy” gas fills is kind of tempting. That about sums it up. Unless you’re building a passive house or live somewhere with wild temperature swings, ...
RE: Manual Vs. Power Tools for Window Projects: Which Do You Reach For?
I’m right there with you - detail sanders just don’t cut it for muntins or anything with intricate profiles. Even the “fine” ones tend to flatten out sharp edges or leave swirl marks, especially if there’s old, brittle p...
RE: Foggy windows driving me nuts - what’s actually normal?
Actually, I’d argue a humidity monitor’s more critical than you think - especially in older places where insulation and air exchange are unpredictable. High humidity’s a big contributor to persistent window fog and even ...
RE: KEEPING THE SUN OUT WITHOUT GOING BROKE
I see a lot of folks here leaning on layering, which does help, but I’d argue the real game changer is exterior shading. Honestly, once sunlight’s through the glass, most of the heat’s already inside - cellular shades an...
RE: Saving money on new windows: my favorite trick so far
Rope caulk’s a solid workaround for drafts, especially with old frames that don’t seal well anymore. You’re right about condensation - nothing short of proper glass or frame replacement really fixes that. Still, for most...
RE: Getting help with window upgrades: what’s actually available?
EnergyStar Rebate Finder is decent, but definitely not a silver bullet. I’ve run into gaps with it - sometimes rebates listed are already expired, or you click through and the utility’s page is a maze. In my area (Midwes...
RE: City Noise Driving You Nuts? My Window Upgrade Story
Secondary glazing definitely has its place, especially in older properties where you want to retain the original sashes. The air gap you get with a proper secondary system can outperform slimline double glazing for noise...
RE: What do you do with old window frames and glass?
That lines up with what I’ve seen. Restoring old sashes with epoxy consolidation and borate treatment can be surprisingly effective if you catch the decay early. I’d add that making sure the glazing putty is intact and t...
RE: Sliding vs. casement aluminum windows for a sleek look - thoughts?
Casements definitely seal tighter - compression gaskets beat the sliding seals hands down for air and sound. But yeah, the cranks are a weak point if kids are rough. I’ve seen some of those upgraded sliders with thermal ...
RE: Rain sneaking in around my window - caulk or weather stripping?
That’s been my experience too. I’ve found that caulk alone rarely solves persistent water intrusion, especially if the window frame isn’t square or there’s hidden rot. Weather stripping is great for air leaks, but for wa...
