IF YOU COULD UPGRADE YOUR WINDOWS TO A DIFFERENT GAS, WOULD YOU GO FANCY OR STICK WITH BASIC?

Honestly, I get the hype around “premium” gases, but unless you’re living in the Arctic or building a passive house from scratch, argon seems like the sweet spot. I did a ton of research before swapping mine out—krypton just didn’t seem worth the price jump for a few percent more efficiency. Plus, sealing up those weird gaps around my old windows made a bigger difference than any fancy gas could. Sometimes I wonder if the window companies just want to sell us on the next shiny thing...

Couldn’t agree more. I swapped out my panes last summer and went with argon too—couldn’t justify paying double for krypton when, honestly, drafty frames were the real problem. Plugged those up with some cheap weatherstripping and felt the difference right away. Sometimes it feels like window companies are selling snake oil with all these “premium” upgrades... unless you’re living in a science lab or something, argon’s plenty good.

- Argon’s usually the sweet spot for most homes. Cost-effective, solid performance.
- Krypton only makes sense in ultra-thin triple panes or extreme climates—otherwise, you’re paying a premium for minimal gains.
- Air leaks and poor seals are the real energy killers. Upgrading the gas won’t fix those.
- Seen plenty of people surprised by how much weatherstripping alone helps. Fancy gases can’t compete with stopping drafts.
- Honestly, unless your windows are already top-notch, upgrading to krypton is like putting race fuel in an old sedan... just not worth it for most folks.
