Funny how basements never seem to stay dry until you go all-in...
That’s the truth. I’ve only owned my place for a year and already learned that water is like a ninja—shows up where you least expect it, especially after a big rain.
Here’s what I’ve picked up (and yeah, I’m still learning):
- Tried the “quick fix” waterproof paint on the inside. Looked great for about three months. Then we got one of those sideways rainstorms and… surprise puddle.
- Checked gutters and downspouts next. Turns out, one was dumping water right by the foundation. After extending it away from the house, things improved a bit but didn’t solve it completely.
- Grading was another headache. My backyard slopes toward the house (who designed this?!). Shoveling dirt to create a slope away helped more than I expected, but not perfect.
Honestly, every time I think I’ve won, water finds a new path. It’s like playing whack-a-mole with leaks.
I keep hearing about digging down for that membrane too. Sounds intense (and expensive), but your breakdown actually makes it less intimidating somehow. The mini-excavator part both terrifies and intrigues me… Not sure my tiny yard could handle it without destroying my fence or, knowing my luck, hitting a utility line.
For now, I’m sticking with outside fixes and keeping an eye on things during storms. If it gets worse, might have to bite the bullet and go “all-in” like you did.
Props for tackling that project yourself! My arms get sore just thinking about it...
