Been thinking about replacing the windows in my house, and the contractor I'm talking to mentioned a discount if I pay the whole thing in cash upfront. Sounds tempting, but also kinda sketchy... like, what if something goes wrong or they delay the job? Would you guys be comfortable handing over a big chunk of cash before any work even starts? Curious how others would handle this sorta thing.
I've been through something similar when I upgraded my windows last year. A few thoughts:
- Paying cash upfront can be tempting, especially with a decent discount. Contractors often prefer cash because it saves them on processing fees and paperwork.
- But you're right to feel cautious—handing over a large sum before any work starts does carry some risk. If something goes wrong or the job gets delayed, you lose leverage.
- One thing you could do is ask for references from previous customers who paid cash upfront. See how their experience went.
- Also, consider negotiating a compromise: maybe pay half upfront and half upon completion? That way, both sides have skin in the game.
- Lastly, make sure you get everything clearly documented in writing—timeline, materials, warranty details, etc. Even if you're paying cash, a solid contract protects everyone involved.
Good luck with the project... new windows can really boost your home's energy efficiency and comfort.
"Also, consider negotiating a compromise: maybe pay half upfront and half upon completion? That way, both sides have skin in the game."
This is exactly what I did when we replaced our siding last summer. Paid half upfront and half after inspection. Felt fair to both sides, and it kept things moving along smoothly. Definitely get everything in writing though—it's easy for small details to slip through the cracks otherwise... learned that the hard way with a previous project.
Half upfront might work fine for siding, but windows are a different beast—custom orders, lead times, etc. I'd actually recommend a smaller deposit (maybe 20-30%) upfront, another partial payment upon delivery, and final payment after installation and inspection. Protects you better if something goes sideways...
