Slightly different angle – did anyone here go through a big box store (Home Depot/Lowe’s) for their window installation? I see those stores advertise window installs, and I wonder how that compares to using a specialized window company. I figured they likely subcontract local installers anyway, but maybe the prices or warranties differ?
I ended up going with a local company myself (and had a good experience), but I’m curious if anyone has insight or experiences with the Home Depot route for windows.
@crypto728 From what I know (and a friend’s experience), the big box stores do indeed subcontract to local installers. My neighbor went through Home Depot for their windows. The windows themselves were from a major brand (Simonton, I believe) but the install crew was a third-party contractor that Home Depot hired. The experience she had was okay – not terrible, not amazing. It was pretty comparable to hiring a local company directly, except maybe a bit more expensive than the lowest local bid because Home Depot takes a cut.
One possible advantage is financing deals; sometimes Home Depot or Lowe’s offer special financing or promotions. But you can often get financing through the local companies too (as some folks above mentioned). Warranty-wise, I think you get the manufacturer warranty and maybe an install warranty backed by the store. In my neighbor’s case, one window had an issue and Home Depot coordinated the fix through the subcontractor eventually. It got resolved, but she felt communication was a little slower going through an extra layer. If you already have good local companies in mind, I’d say working directly with them might be more straightforward. But if you have a gift card or a big discount at a big box store, it’s not out of the question – just remember you’re essentially still using a local crew, just via the store.
Is there an “off-season” for window installations in Tampa Bay where you can get better deals? Like, do these companies run discounts in winter vs. summer, or around hurricane season? I’m trying to time my project to maybe save a few bucks if possible.
I recall hearing that summer is super busy (everyone wants upgrades before hurricane season peaks), so maybe fall or winter might be easier scheduling and possibly promotions? If anyone timed their project intentionally or got a deal by waiting, let me know!
@breezetraveler Good question. I asked a similar thing when I was getting quotes. The consensus from the companies was that their schedules are pretty steady year-round, but there can be slight lulls in the cooler months (like December/January) when fewer people are thinking about hurricanes. One of the reps actually did mention they sometimes have off-season promos or are more willing to negotiate a bit on price if their calendar isn’t full.
In my case, we got our quotes in early spring. We didn’t see any obvious seasonal discount, but we did get a small price break due to a promotion on a certain window brand. I have seen Karoly advertise a winter special in the past on their website, and a friend of mine got a “holiday discount” from another window company for signing in December. So, it can happen. If your timing is flexible, it doesn’t hurt to ask if there’s a slow-season discount. Worst case they say no; best case, you save a few bucks. Just don’t wait so long that a storm hits before you get the windows done, of course!
Reading these stories and having recently done my windows, I have one regret: not doing it sooner. I spent years dealing with drafty, ugly windows because I kept putting off the project thinking it would be too expensive or a hassle. It turns out it was one of the best upgrades I’ve done to my home, and I wish I had bitten the bullet earlier.
So if anyone is on the fence, as long as you have a good contractor (like the ones recommended here), the process isn’t as scary as you might think. And the results are totally worth it. My house feels brand new in many ways.
@psage55 @snowboarder85 Thanks for the info on warranties! Good to know these companies back up their work. I'll be sure to get all that in writing. Feeling a lot more confident now. 🙂
@sky_paws Thank you for the comparison feedback. I ended up going with ProTech for my job (they slightly edged out on schedule for me too). So far it's been a smooth process – windows are on order. I’ll report back once the work is done, but I’m feeling optimistic after hearing everyone’s experiences. 🙏
One more thing I’d suggest: double-check the window order details when you sign the contract. In my case, one small window was mis-measured by the sales guy (or mis-ordered), and when the crew went to install, the new window didn't fit the opening. 😬 It wasn’t a huge deal – they boarded it up and ordered a replacement of the correct size, but it added an extra two weeks to get that last window in. The company handled it professionally and it didn't cost me extra, but it taught me that mistakes can happen.
So it’s not a bad idea to review the measurements and window styles on your contract or order confirmation, just to catch any errors early. My project was with a smaller local company and they made it right, but I'm sure even the best companies can occasionally mix up an order.
This discussion has been super informative. Even though I already had my windows done last year, I’ve learned a lot and it validates my experience. Keep the stories coming – it’s great to hear how everyone’s projects turned out.
Final Update: Hey everyone! I’m back with the post-installation update as promised. The project with Karoly Windows & Doors is now complete, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. The installation took place last week and spanned two days, just as they estimated. Day 1, the crew arrived bright and early (actually a few minutes before the 8 AM start time, grabbing coffee on my driveway 🙂). They put down drop cloths everywhere and got right to work removing the old windows. By the end of the first day, they had all 10 new windows set in place. Day 2 was for wrapping up the details: insulating, caulking, installing the trim, and doing my sliding glass door (and the little kitchen pass-through window modification I wanted).
I have to say, the crew was fantastic – really skilled and courteous. As others mentioned about Karoly’s teams, they were extremely careful with my home. They moved some furniture for me and covered everything to protect against dust. They even worked through an afternoon thunderstorm by focusing on indoor trim work until the rain cleared for exterior caulking. The small custom change I requested (converting one window into a pass-through opening to the patio) was handled beautifully. Their carpenter cut out the lower portion of the wall beneath the window and finished it with a countertop ledge. It looks like it was always meant to be there! And no surprise charges – the cost for that custom work was exactly what we discussed beforehand.
The county inspector came on the morning of Day 3 for the final inspection (Karoly arranged that). He checked each window and the door, making sure the hurricane impact glass stickers and window anchors were up to code. We passed without any issues. The inspector actually complimented the quality of the installation (always nice to hear). After sign-off, the Karoly project manager made sure we had all our warranty paperwork and even gave us a quick tutorial on how to remove the window panes for cleaning and how to work the new locks.
Now that everything’s done, the difference is immediately noticeable. The house is quieter and the A/C doesn’t run as often to keep things cool. We had a couple of very hot days and I barely felt any heat near the windows, whereas before you could feel the hot spots. And last night, there was a heavy rain – not a drop or leak, and I could hardly hear the rain until I opened the door. 😃 Visually, the new windows and slider look awesome and really update the curb appeal of the house.
I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone in this thread. Your advice and shared experiences gave me the confidence to make the right choice and know what to expect. For anyone reading this later on, I can wholeheartedly recommend Karoly Windows & Doors (and it sounds like ProTech and a few others are great too) based on this journey. It’s been a pleasure going through this process with all of your help. Thanks again, and I’ll still be around the forum – happy to pay it forward!
