RE: If My Windows Could Think for Themselves…
Totally agree - those weight pockets are basically dust traps. When I first took apart our 1920s sashes, I found what looked like a century’s worth of gray fluff. I’ve tried vacuuming with a long crevice tool, but it’s n...
RE: Trimming window openings without wrecking your walls
I hear you on the foam - tried it once on my 1915 windows and ended up scraping blobs off the plaster for hours. The backer rod plus caulk combo has been way less stressful for me, especially where the frames are all won...
RE: What would you do if your double-pane windows started fogging up?
Yeah, the custom size struggle is real. My house dates to the late 60s, and it’s like every window was measured by a different person with a different tape. I actually had a similar experience - ended up tracing cardboar...
RE: Saving on Window Swaps: My Favorite Trick to Cut Down Labor Fees
I’ve actually had better luck with blue painter’s tape than the green stuff, weirdly enough. I know everyone swears by the green for delicate surfaces, but I had it pull up a patch of my baseboard paint last summer. I th...
RE: How much time did you spend replacing your windows?
Yeah, that’s the truth. I tried to “save” my original trim and ended up snapping one of the corner pieces anyway. It’s like those old houses fight back sometimes. But honestly, even with the headaches, I’d say it was wor...
RE: Dealing with steamy windows: dehumidifier or just crack the window?
Funny you mention old windows - my place is a 1950s ranch and those original double-hungs sweat like crazy in winter. I tried a dehumidifier in the bathroom, thinking it’d help, but honestly it just made the room colder ...
RE: When the bugs invade: a backyard mystery with two types of screens
That’s funny, I tried the lint roller thing too and ended up with a sticky mess on my hands - literally. The foam paintbrush idea is clever though. I’ve been using an old toothbrush for corners but it takes forever. Leav...
RE: Swapping out old window handles - worth it for the style boost?
I get what you’re saying about the hardware making a difference, but I’ve gotta say, in my place the draft was mostly from warped frames and ancient weatherstripping. I tried beefier handles first - - but honestly, it b...
RE: If these walls could talk: windows that changed everything
That’s the truth - sometimes you can spot a rushed job just by looking at the bead lines or how the corners are finished. I had a window put in a few years back, north side of the house, and even though it doesn’t get mu...
RE: Is it really cheaper to swap your own windows? Real numbers wanted
This is exactly where I landed when I did my back porch windows. The “cheaper” part feels so obvious at first - you look at the quote, then you tally up your receipts from Lowe’s, and it’s like, wow, I just saved $600+ p...
