ReliaBilt double-hung sash tilts out during normal use
What can make a ReliaBilt double-hung sash tilt out of its normal vertical position during ordinary opening, raising, or lowering? I’m trying to understand what to look at before assuming it needs an adjustment.
Would it help to check whether both tilt latches engage evenly at the top? I’m also curious whether the cause is more likely to differ if the sash releases on one side versus both, or if it only lets go while moving in a particular direction. Could a balance or another fitting be involved, or does that usually show up as a sash that won’t stay raised instead?

Even engagement at the top is worth checking, but it helps to distinguish a latch that never catches from one that catches but doesn’t hold. Close the sash slowly and watch each latch enter its keeper. If a latch stays retracted or misses the keeper, it isn’t engaging; if it enters but the sash can still tilt out, the latch may not be retaining it. That points to different things to investigate: alignment at the keeper versus the latch’s ability to hold.
I wouldn’t read “the latch enters its keeper but the sash still tilts” as proof the latch itself is bad. If one side drops or leads the other while the sash is moving, a balance or its connection could be involved. If the sash stays level and releases at the top, the latch-and-keeper fit is the more direct suspect. Does that distinction sound right?
