RE: keeping cool indoors - do window films really help?
Whether an absorbing film is safe for a particular window depends on the glass-and-film combination, not just the film type. Some combinations can increase thermal stress, especially with certain insulated or tinted pane...
RE: Worth it to splurge on triple-pane windows or stick with double?
I’ve seen that a lot - folks want triple everywhere, then the sticker shock hits. In my own place, we did triple just in our bedroom since it faces the main road. The difference at night is wild, but honestly, the back o...
RE: Saw a study on window longevity - are we doing enough?
That hits home. I remember working on an old craftsman where the owner had layered storms for years, but the sills were practically mulch underneath. We peeled everything back and - yep - had to do a full rebuild in spot...
RE: Foggy windows driving me nuts - what’s actually normal?
You’re spot on about the sun just roasting those seals - south and west sides always go first in my experience, too. I’ve pulled out sills that looked fine from the outside, then found the wood underneath was like a wet ...
RE: Swapping out window hinges: do you go solo or call in the pros?
That’s always the dilemma, isn’t it? I once tried to balance a heavy sash on my knee while reaching for the hinge screws - felt like a circus act. Still, above ground floor, I’ll take the awkward teamwork over a busted w...
RE: Struggling to pick windows that don’t make my ranch look dated
That “snowball” effect is real. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone in to swap out window trim thinking it was a quick update, then the next thing I know, I’m staring at my baseboards and doors like they’re from a ...
RE: Getting old windows unstuck without breaking them
Funny you mention the painter’s tape - I've definitely tried to “save time” and skip it, only to spend twice as long cleaning up the edges later. I always keep an old credit card in my tool pouch too. Sometimes it slides...
RE: ANYONE DEAL WITH SIMONTON WARRANTY LATELY?
That whole “legacy” cutoff thing has always bugged me too. I’ve been putting in and servicing windows for years, and Simonton’s warranty process is honestly one of the most unpredictable parts of my job. I’ve seen custom...
RE: Big windows vs heating bills - worth it?
I actually installed thermal blinds in my place last winter, and I'd mostly agree with your take. They're not miracle workers, but I did notice a difference on those really cold nights - especially since my windows are p...
RE: Big windows vs heating bills - worth it?
Totally get where you're coming from on this one. When I first started looking into window film, I had almost the exact same worry. We bought an older home a few years back, and the big windows in our living room were a ...
