RE: Things I wish I’d known before swapping out my old windows
That brings back memories. When I did my first window swap, I figured I’d just be dealing with some dust and maybe a few spiderwebs. Nope. Ended up pulling out a wad of insulation that looked like it had seen better days...
RE: Swapping Out Old Windows in the Mountains: Worth It or Just a Headache?
That’s the tradeoff, isn’t it? I remember when we did ours, my partner and I kept joking that we should’ve just moved into a tent in the backyard for the week. The dust, the noise, the random screws turning up in the lau...
RE: Trying to pick between modern composite and classic aluminum windows
Couldn’t agree more with this. I live in a spot where winter means “maybe bring a jacket,” so the idea of dropping thousands on composite never really made sense for me either. I’ve got these old-school aluminum frames i...
RE: Swapping Out Old Windows in the Mountains: Worth It or Just a Headache?
Man, I hear you about the old wood frames. My first winter up here, I swear I could feel the wind whistling through the living room - like the windows were trying to serenade me or something. We finally bit the bullet an...
RE: When high-end windows aren’t all they’re cracked up to be

I tried one of those caulk tools once - thought it would be a game changer, but honestly, my finger did a better job. The tool just smeared stuff around and was a pain to clean. Maybe I’m just old school, but I keep goin...
RE: CHEAP WAYS TO KEEP THE COLD OUT OF OLD WINDOWS?
I hear you on the rope caulk not being pretty, but honestly, I tried it last year and just couldn’t get it to stick well in the corners. Maybe my windows are too warped? I actually went back to the shrink film, even with...
RE: Do triple pane windows make rooms feel darker?
I know the whole “triple pane means darker” thing gets tossed around, but honestly, I didn’t really notice much of a difference in our place. Maybe it’s just the direction our windows face (mostly south and west), but af...
RE: What do you do with old window frames and glass?
Funny, I actually had better luck with the steamer than the heat gun, but maybe it’s just my old house and how dry everything is. Didn’t get as much gunk as you described - maybe I didn’t linger long enough? Still, I hea...
