RE: Big brands or local shops: which windows are actually better?
Honestly, the warranty matters more than people think. Local shops are great for details, but when something fails 8-10 years down the line, big brands usually still answer the phone. Seen too many folks stuck with custo...
RE: Making sense of window upgrades: swapping air for argon
- Weatherstripping and caulk are solid, but they don’t solve everything. In old houses, air leaks show up in weird spots. - That’s the big problem with window film kits - condensation is a sign you’ve still got moistu...
RE: Swapping out window hinges: do you go solo or call in the pros?
- Agree on pre-drilling - saves a lot of headaches, especially with old, brittle frames. - I only bring in help if the window’s oversized or there’s rot. Otherwise, solo works, but you have to be patient. - Tape helps, b...

- Scoring both paint lines is non-negotiable. Tried skipping it once - regretted that fast. - Salvaging old trim is almost always the move if it’s got character. For plain, modern stuff, I just budget for new. - Dust...
RE: Window letting in cold air - any quick fixes?
- Magnetic kits work, but only if the window frame is clean and flat. Any warping or old paint, they don’t stick well. - They’re more of a project than rope caulk - takes longer to line everything up right. - I’ve seen t...
RE: Easy ways to keep your windows from aging too fast
- Tried weatherstripping tape on a few window jobs - mixed results at best. - It works okay for smaller gaps, but larger spaces or uneven surfaces... forget it. - Agree silicone holds up better long-term, even if it's me...
