RE: Getting your space ready before new windows go in - my checklist
Tried those foam-edged vent covers last fall when I was painting and honestly, they’re kind of “meh.” They do stick better than painter’s tape - at least for a day or two - but if your vent grilles are plastic and a litt...
RE: Keeping rooms bright but cool - how do you do it?
I totally get what you mean about the “dentist’s office” vibe with reflective film. I tried it in our old rental and it just never felt homey - plus, cleaning fingerprints off it was a nightmare. When we moved into this ...
RE: Quieting down city noise: which window upgrades actually work?
That’s exactly what happened to me last winter - condensation city. I tried the window film kits thinking it’d be a quick fix, but between the drafts and the old wooden sashes, I just ended up with foggy plastic and a bu...
RE: Wood vs. vinyl windows near the ocean - what’s holding up better for you?
I figured vinyl would be low-maintenance too, but I’m already noticing some yellowing after just a couple years. My neighbor’s wood windows look great, but he’s always out there sanding or painting. Honestly, starting to...
RE: How much would you pay to swap out those drafty windows?
I tried weatherstripping and insulating first, too - honestly, my heating bill barely budged. Maybe like $10 less a month in winter? Not nothing, but not mind-blowing either. Old houses just seem to find new ways to leak...

Yeah, I’ve noticed the same kind of fading on the side facing the water, and I’m pretty sure the salt air speeds things up. I haven’t tried any UV protectant yet - honestly, I keep meaning to, but life gets in the way. S...
RE: Sun-soaked winters: does anyone else use big windows and heavy floors?
Funny you mention the noise - my place is right on a bus route, so I was desperate for some kind of fix. Swapping to double-glazed units made a noticeable difference, but honestly, I still get a fair bit of rumble when t...
RE: If you had to pick: cordless blinds or shades for a house with kids and pets?
I’ve actually had that exact thing happen - picked up some “temporary” plastic blinds for the laundry room since it’s always muggy in there, and they’re still kicking after five years. Meanwhile, the metal ones I put in ...
RE: Cheap ways to dress up boring window frames?
Yeah, I’ve heard about the pine vs. MDF debate - makes sense, especially with humidity. I went with MDF mostly because it was cheap and easy to cut, but now I’m noticing a couple corners starting to swell where I didn’t ...
