RE: Swapping out window hinges: do you go solo or call in the pros?
I get the hesitation, but I’ve actually had decent luck with wood hardener and a good filler - key is letting it cure properly and not rushing. Not saying it’s forever, but if you’re not ready to rip out the whole frame,...
RE: Tackling Old Windows: My Weekend Project Went Better Than Expected
That’s pretty much what I did too, though I left a couple of “mystery drafts” under the stairs just in case. My house is 1920s and it’s basically a sieve, so honestly, sealing up the windows made a huge difference. I do ...
RE: Salt air and window headaches: is it just me?
I actually found the foam strips didn’t last as long as I hoped, especially right by the ocean. They sealed well at first, but after a couple wet winters, they started crumbling and let in more moisture than silicone tap...
RE: Getting precise measurements for weird-shaped windows (arches, triangles, etc.)
Yeah, I’ve done the cardboard trick too - honestly, sometimes it ends up working better than those fancy gauges, especially when you’re dealing with old, uneven trim. One thing I’ve found helpful is using painter’s tape ...

RE: Is it just me or do new windows barely make a dent in the bills?
Yeah, I was surprised too - thought new windows would be a game changer, but honestly, the biggest difference for me came from crawling around with a flashlight and finding all those sneaky drafts. My attic hatch was bas...
RE: Getting help with window upgrades: what’s actually available?
Honestly, I’d almost rather have a bigger rebate even if it takes longer. The paperwork’s a pain, yeah, but for me, the inspection steps were actually pretty straightforward - maybe depends on the city? My main gripe was...
RE: Why is outside noise STILL getting through my windows?
Funny you mention the “concrete bunker” thing - my neighbor actually redid his entire basement with extra drywall layers and green glue, thinking it’d fix the rumble from the street. Helped a bit, but those low frequenci...
RE: What if you had to live in the desert for a year?
That’s the truth - every window in my place has weatherstripping, but somehow the dust still finds its way inside. I tried sealing every gap and even invested in an air purifier, but it’s like fighting a losing battle. A...
RE: Keeping Cool: Best Window Choices for Sweltering Summers?
I get where everyone’s coming from about new windows being a big upgrade, but I’m not totally convinced it’s always the best move - at least not right away. I actually went this route first because my place has weird-si...
