RE: Letting more sun in without major renos - what’s worked for you?
Tried those films too, and honestly, I wasn’t impressed. The light just looked weird and my succulents started looking sad. Ended up sticking with cellular shades - easy to adjust, no weird tint, and way less hassle than...
RE: Measuring windows for replacements: what did I do wrong?
Honestly, I’ve done the same thing with my 1915 windows - sometimes there’s just no “square” to measure from. But if the wall bows out, did you check for rot or shifting? Sometimes a weird gap means something’s moving be...
RE: How worried should I be about lead paint when swapping out old windows?
Same here - no matter how careful you are, that stuff hides everywhere. I’d say don’t trust swabs much either. If you’re gutting old windows, invest in plastic sheeting and a real HEPA vac. It’s overkill until it isn’t.
RE: Window financing deals seem kinda sketchy lately?
Not sure I totally buy into the “invisible benefits” outweighing the cost, at least not every time. I get that less noise and fewer drafts are nice, but if your old windows aren’t falling apart, sometimes it’s just not w...
RE: What surprised me (and what went wrong) installing my own windows
Yep, learned that the hard way. First time I used foam, I figured “more is better.” Big mistake - my trim bowed out so bad I had to pull it off and start over. Now I use the low-expansion stuff and go slow. Caulk’s defin...
RE: How I spotted a shady window installer (and what tipped me off)
Right there with you - those scare tactics are wild. Had a guy try to tell me my old windows were “dangerous” because of a little draft last winter. Honestly, like you said, half the time it’s a $10 fix and some elbow gr...
RE: CHEAP WAYS TO KEEP THE COLD OUT OF OLD WINDOWS?
You nailed it about the condensation - layering up does help with drafts, but it’s a constant battle with moisture. I had the same issue last year; ended up with a bit of mold on the bottom sash because I got lazy about ...
RE: Cracked Windows After Big Temperature Swings - Anyone Else Fed Up?
Honestly, I don’t buy that it’s just “part of living with older glass.” There’s definitely more you can do before shelling out for full replacements. - that’s because the film traps moisture inside if the room’s humid t...
RE: Did you go Euro for passive house windows or stick with local triple-pane?
Nailed it. I went Euro tilt-turn for my own place - mainly because I can’t stand drafts, and honestly, the air sealing is just next level. Yeah, tracking down hardware if something breaks isn’t fun, but in 8 years I have...
RE: Getting approved for window financing: how strict are they really?
I’ve run into the same thing - one lender wanted a full inspection for swapping out two windows, another barely glanced at my receipts. Honestly, it’s just whoever you get on the phone that day. Feels more random than an...
