RE: Would you attempt to swap out your own windows or call in the pros?
- Had a similar experience - did the “shim and caulk” routine on my 1920s windows. Looked fine for a while, but by the second winter, drafts were back and paint started cracking. - - that’s exactly how it played out f...
RE: Windows that won’t break the bank (or your off-grid dreams)
- Gotta admit, the whole bubble wrap phase had its charm - felt like a science project every winter. - I switched to those shrink film kits for a while. Not perfect, but kind of fun with the hairdryer, like you said. - D...
RE: Letting more sun in without major renos - what’s worked for you?
Same here - tried the foil trick behind my old radiators and honestly didn't notice much difference. Probably more useful for heat than daylight. About those reflective shelves for plants: I put one up last spring, hopi...
RE: That time I learned the hard way that “dry heat” isn’t always better
- That’s the truth about old sashes. I’ve spent more time than I care to admit messing with rope-and-pulley windows from the 1920s. Sometimes you can adjust or shim things, but when the wood’s swollen or the frame’s out ...

RE: Weird hairline cracks showing up on brand new window panes?
- Not sure I’d rule out the install just yet, honestly. Even if the caulk and seals look okay, sometimes the frame can get torqued a bit during installation - especially if the opening isn’t perfectly square. That tiny s...
RE: Tough weather and windows: paint or aluminum cladding?
- Totally get the frustration with those corners. Took me a while to figure out how much pressure to use before the trim started to look weird. - Same here - mine’s this faded off-white that never really matches anythin...
RE: Making window locks last longer: my quick fix
- Totally get the hesitation - pulling sashes sounds like a hassle, but it actually made a big difference for me. - Did it on two old windows last fall. A bit of elbow grease, but the tracks were full of gunk I never w...
