RE: Frost on the glass, but the frame stays dry
The timing is useful context: frost that appears only during a hard cold snap is less concerning than frost that keeps forming in milder weather, especially if indoor humidity is lower. Nearby heat and airflow matter too...
RE: Noise, dust, and drafts: city window upgrades worth it?
Funny you mention the curtains - I've got thick velvet ones in my 1920s place, and honestly, they did more for the drafts than the pricey inserts I tried. The inserts helped a bit with noise, but I still get that fine du...
RE: Things I wish I’d known before swapping out my old windows
I’ll admit, I’m not totally convinced that using old papers and catalogs was a bad idea for insulation - at least they filled some gaps, even if not up to modern standards. When I demoed the windows in my kitchen, I actu...
RE: Dealing with sweaty windows: Which Energy Star brands actually help?
I swapped out my old aluminum sliders for Marvin fiberglass last winter, and honestly, the condensation dropped way more than I expected. Still get a little at the bottom corners when it’s below zero, but nothing like be...

Funny you mention the second story cleaning - been there, regretted that. I swapped out a couple of upstairs windows for casements thinking the airflow would be worth it, but turns out leaning out with a rag isn’t my ide...
RE: Swapping out old windows for fiberglass: totally worth the effort?
That’s wild about the yellowing - seen that happen more than once, especially when folks push for that “real wood” vibe with cheaper materials. I went full fiberglass on my 1960s ranch a few years back after getting tire...
RE: Which matters more to you: original wood windows or modern replacements?
That plastic film ritual... yeah, that’s all too familiar. I’ve been there, standing on a rickety chair in November with a hair dryer in one hand and double-sided tape stuck to my socks. I’ll admit, I held out for years ...
