RE: How much extra should high-altitude window installation cost?
Field-measurement responsibility is important, but the quote should also identify whether permits, engineering review, and required inspections are included. Mountain jurisdictions may impose site-specific requirements f...
RE: Impact glass vs. shutters for storm season - what’s your pick?
Interesting point about the energy savings - I hadn’t really considered that as a big factor with impact glass. I’ve always wondered if the cost difference ever really balances out over time, especially in older homes wh...
RE: Tough weather and windows: paint or aluminum cladding?
I’ve had a similar experience with caulk breaking down way faster than I expected, especially around the sills. My place is 1920s-era, so the windows were never airtight to begin with, but I swear the freeze-thaw cycles ...
RE: Getting your space ready before new windows go in - my checklist
That misting trick is underrated, especially with old lath and plaster. I’ve also taped off vents and doorways with plastic sheeting, but somehow, fine dust still migrates. HEPA vacs help but don’t expect miracles. It’s ...
RE: What would you do if a window pane cracks while you're trying to replace it?
That’s so true. I’ve had glass show up in my socks a week after I thought I’d cleaned everything. The putty knife idea is smart - never tried that, but I can see how it’d help with those tiny fragments that wedge into wo...
RE: Do triple pane windows make rooms feel darker?
I’ve noticed the same thing - after installing triple pane windows, my living room definitely feels a bit dimmer, especially when it’s overcast. I think it’s the low-E coatings; they’re great for insulation but can reduc...
RE: Getting approved for window financing: how strict are they really?
That’s honestly how I felt when our water heater died in the middle of winter. I weighed the cheaper options, but the hassle just wasn’t worth it with a house full of cold showers. The “fast track” financing did cost mor...
RE: If you had to pick: cordless blinds or shades for a house with kids and pets?
That’s been my experience too - “smudge resistant” doesn’t seem to mean much when you’ve got small hands and, in my case, a Labrador with a knack for nose prints. I installed cordless cellular shades throughout the house...
RE: Window replacements that actually look old (but work like new?)
That really resonates. I put in some “historically accurate” replacements a couple years ago and, honestly, I’ve had mixed feelings ever since. The thermal efficiency is great - no more icy drafts right by the couch - bu...
RE: Did you know Jeld-Wen started as a small mill in Oregon?
I get the appeal of wood windows, but yeah, thermal efficiency just isn’t there with single-pane. We did a low-e argon retrofit a few years back - kept the original look but finally stopped living in an icebox. Not as ch...
