RE: Anyone else tried those layered sheer shades?
I’ve seen folks double up with sheers and then slap the plastic film behind them - looks fine from inside, but the sheers don’t really hide the crinkly look if you’re picky. Ever notice any condensation issues with the f...
RE: Would You Go All-Black With Your Home’s Interior If It Became Trendy?
I get what you’re saying about black walls making a space feel closed in, but isn’t that more of a window issue than a paint one? If you’ve got small or shaded windows, even lighter colors can look dingy. Ever thought ab...
RE: Swapping out window hinges: do you go solo or call in the pros?
I get where you’re coming from - those tiny gaps can drive you nuts. I’ve seen folks swap hinges thinking it’s a quick fix, but if the wood’s already out of square or swollen, you’re basically chasing your tail. Ever tri...
RE: Keeping the cold out: DIY window hacks for off-grid living
You’re spot on about bubble wrap being a quick fix at best. I’ve seen it used plenty, but honestly, it’s rarely airtight and tends to peel or sag after a while. Have you tried magnetic acrylic panels? They’re not cheap, ...
RE: Tackling Old Windows: My Weekend Project Went Better Than Expected
I get where you’re coming from, but I’m not totally sold on just letting things slide. If the window isn’t square, aren’t you just asking for drafts or sticky sashes down the road? I’ve seen a lot of “good enough” instal...
RE: How I spotted a shady window installer (and what tipped me off)
That’s exactly it - people think a fat bead of caulk is some magic fix, but it just traps water. I’ve always wondered, though, how many installers actually get called back when their shortcuts cause issues? Or do most fo...
RE: Triple-pane vs. double-pane windows for northern winters: worth the upgrade?
That lines up with what I see on jobs. People drop big money on glass, but drafty frames still kill comfort. I swapped out a few old double-panes for triple last year - honestly, the difference was subtle unless you sat ...
RE: Keeping wood windows healthy - any tricks to stop them rotting?
That’s interesting about the storm windows - I’ve seen them help, but I always wonder if they trap moisture sometimes, especially on older houses where the fit isn’t perfect. Have you ever noticed condensation building u...
RE: Keeping the heat in without cranking up the thermostat
That’s fair, though I sometimes wonder if people overestimate how much those little fixes actually help. Outlet gaskets and weatherstripping are good, but in my experience, a lot of the real heat loss comes from old wind...
RE: Struggling to keep drafts out - window sealing tape worth it?
Tried the shrink-wrap stuff last winter in my own place - honestly wasn't expecting much. It did cut down the drafts noticeably, but it's not exactly a miracle fix. Installation was a bit fiddly too; a hairdryer and pati...
