RE: Windows that won’t break the bank (or your off-grid dreams)
Shrink film kits are a mixed bag for me. Did 'em last year and they actually sealed out the drafts better than I expected, but man, getting that plastic smooth with a hair dryer is like fighting a giant clingy ghost. Als...
RE: Trimming window openings without wrecking your walls
That expanding foam is wild stuff - first time I used it, I thought I’d filled the Grand Canyon, then came back later and half of it had shrunk into weird little valleys. I’ve had better luck with the two-pass thing too,...
RE: Battling drafty windows - what actually works in winter?
You’re not alone - my living room looked like a towel graveyard last winter. I haven’t tried the magnetic panels, but honestly, my window frames are so crooked I feel like they’d just pop off. The shrink film works okay ...
RE: CAN YOU REALLY DOUBLE DIP ON REBATES AND TAX CREDITS?
Haha, same here - my “system” is just a shoebox with random warranty cards and faded receipts. Did your installer say anything about the tax credit? Ours was super vague, just handed me a pamphlet and said “good luck.”
RE: Would you take out a loan just to get new windows?
I’m right there with you - our windows are original to the house (built in ‘68) and honestly, I think they’re mostly held together by layers of old paint and wishful thinking. Every winter it’s like a wind tunnel in the ...
RE: Swapping out old windows: worth the hassle?
Funny, I thought the same thing until last winter when my old windows basically turned my living room into a wind tunnel. Tried the whole resealing-and-hope-for-the-best routine, but it was just throwing money at a lost ...
RE: CHOOSING BETWEEN MARVIN AND OLD INTEGRITY WINDOWS – ANY REGRETS?
I hear you, but I gotta say, sometimes I wonder if we go a little overboard chasing “tight” houses. My neighbor kept his old Integrity windows (with a little weatherstripping tune-up) and honestly, he’s never had the sam...
RE: If you had to pick: cordless blinds or shades for a house with kids and pets?
I swear, every time I get the cordless blinds to hang straight, the dog comes barreling through and bumps them crooked again. At this point, I just call it “abstract window art.” I do like the slow-rise roller shades tho...
RE: What I actually used to wrap my old windows (and what I wish I'd had)
I get what you’re saying about patience and not expecting perfection, but I gotta admit, I’m more in the “good enough is good enough” camp - especially when it comes to these ancient windows. I tried the painter’s tape t...
RE: Replacing windows without emptying your wallet
Haha, "measure twice, curse once" is too relatable - I swear each DIY project adds at least one new phrase to my cursing vocabulary. Totally get your point about mixing window styles, though. My neighbor did something si...
