RE: How long before the incentive clock runs out?
Couldn’t agree more. I’ve seen folks wait for a bigger rebate, then the funding dries up or the rules change. If it makes sense for your setup and you need it, just go for it. Peace of mind counts for something too.
RE: Does Painting Old Aluminum Window Frames Actually Hold Up Over Time?
Chemical etch definitely does more than sanding, especially on those crusty old frames. I’ve used both zinc chromate and the regular self-etching primers - honestly, the price difference adds up if you’re doing a lot of ...
RE: Saw a story about DIY storm window fails - worth the risk or nah?
Yeah, I’ve seen a lot of those “quick fixes” fall apart once winter actually hits. The plastic clips and duct tape might seem fine for a month or two, but once you get that freeze-thaw cycle, it’s game over. Stainless or...
RE: Trying to pick between angled and curved windows for living room upgrade
Yeah, curved windows are definitely a statement, but I’ve seen more than a few folks ditch them after trying to automate shades or even just fit curtains. Angled windows play way nicer with most of the smart stuff out th...
RE: Local Pella showrooms vs. independent window installers - any real difference?
Honestly, you’re not wrong about the price difference. The showroom almost always comes in higher, at least in my experience. They do have the whole “official” vibe and sometimes a bit more hand-holding through the proce...
RE: Saw a news piece on folks fixing up old aluminum windows themselves - worth the effort?
Yeah, once those old aluminum frames start corroding, it’s kind of game over. I’ve seen folks patch and patch, but you just end up chasing leaks and wiping up puddles. Sometimes new windows are the only way to stop the m...
RE: Keeping windows clear when the air feels like soup
Yeah, that’s pretty much what I tell folks too. Nothing beats some airflow, even if it means bundling up. I’ve swapped out a lot of old windows for clients hoping for a miracle, but even with new double panes, you still ...
RE: ENERGY TAX CREDIT PAPERWORK IS DRIVING ME NUTS - ANYONE ELSE?
That’s basically my whole camera roll - model numbers, serial plates, receipts, you name it. I’ve run into the same mess with mismatched serials between paperwork and what’s actually on the unit. Manufacturers just don’t...
RE: Swapping out old windows for fiberglass: totally worth the effort?
Totally get this. Swapping out old wood for fiberglass is a huge upgrade for most homes, especially when you’re fighting drafts in an older place. I’ve done a bunch of installs in houses from the 40s and 50s, and yeah - ...
RE: Finally won the battle against soggy window frames
Honestly, caulk’s just a band-aid if there’s water getting in from somewhere else. I see this all the time - folks slapping on more caulk, but the real leak’s usually higher up or behind something. Had a job last fall wh...
