RE: Triple pane vs double pane windows: worth the upgrade or just extra cost?
That lines up with what I’ve seen too. Triple pane is awesome for quieting down street noise - my cousin lives near a highway and swears by them for that. But for Midwest weather, unless your windows are drafty or single...
RE: Anyone dealt with droopy window frames before?
That sounds all too familiar. I’ve seen folks try to “pretty up” a sagging header with some creative trim work or a bit of caulk, but like you said, it’s just a bandaid. Had a job last spring - late-60s split-level, wind...
RE: Tips for swapping out broken window panes at home?
That plastic sheen drives me nuts too. Tried epoxy on a sash last spring - ended up with this shiny, lumpy ridge that just screamed “patch job.” I keep coming back to linseed putty, even if it takes forever to skin over....
RE: When the bugs invade: a backyard mystery with two types of screens
Yeah, I’ve swapped out more magnetic screens than I care to count - my neighbor’s golden retriever treats them like a suggestion, not a barrier. I’ll back the custom route for longevity, but you’re right about the frame ...
RE: Storm-resistant glass: worth the hype or just marketing?
I’ve actually seen a couple of those hydrophobic coatings in action, and honestly, they’re kind of hit or miss. On my own windows, after about a year, I noticed the glass looked a bit hazy - almost like there was a film ...
RE: Trading old windows for energy savings: a homeowner’s dilemma
I’ve seen that drafty smell thing a bunch - sometimes folks don’t even realize it’s the old putty or the frame material just soaking up moisture over time. Funny how your nose kind of tunes it out until it’s suddenly gon...
RE: Windows that survive thin air and chilly temps
I totally feel your pain on this one. Reminds me of a job I did a few years back - spent hours installing these high-end, energy-efficient windows for a customer who was convinced they'd solve all her draft problems. A w...
RE: Thinking about privacy glass for home windows - worth the hype?
That's a solid point about cellular shades. I installed them in my own place last year, and honestly, they've been a pleasant surprise. Before that, I was pretty set on privacy glass too, but after working with windows f...
RE: Easy ways to keep your windows from aging too fast
Yeah, compressed air's handy for quick touch-ups, but I've found that grime buildup around window tracks is stubborn as heck. Learned the hard way after ignoring mine for months... ended up spending a whole afternoon scr...
RE: Windows that survive thin air and chilly temps
Haha, totally feel you on that one. Last winter I decided to give the shrink-wrap stuff a shot - big mistake. Spent an hour wrestling with the hairdryer, ended up melting a hole right through the plastic... not my finest...
