RE: How I soundproofed my old windows with laminated glass (and what I’d do differently)
I’ve had similar issues with condensation, especially after adding heavy curtains for sound and insulation. It’s a constant balance - block out noise and drafts, but then you’re wiping down the glass every morning. I did...
RE: Weird ways to spot drafty windows (and do they actually work?)
Heavy curtains helped here too, but only after I sealed the obvious gaps first. Otherwise, I felt like I was just trapping cold air behind the fabric. Have you tried using an incense stick or even a lighter to spot draft...
RE: Feeling stuck between aluminum and vinyl windows - regrets, anyone?
I hear you on the drafty aluminum. In my case, the frames were actually letting in more air than the glass ever did. Swapping to vinyl tightened things up - less noise, fewer drafts, and honestly, my heating bill noticed...
RE: Did you know window boxes used to be called "window gardens"?
I’ve actually had the opposite experience with rough textured paints. Maybe it’s the brand, but mine held up better than the glossy on a cedar box - less peeling after a wet winter. As for copper tape, I agree it’s hit o...
RE: How I dodged a window contractor nightmare (and actually got great windows)
That’s a good call on the notes for pets. I’ve had similar issues - contractors don’t always pay attention to animals, and it only takes a second for one to slip out. I also started marking off-limits rooms with painter’...
RE: ANYONE GETTING MONEY BACK FOR NEW WINDOWS?
You nailed it about every house being its own animal when it comes to energy loss. I’ve seen the same thing - sometimes windows are the clear culprit, sometimes not. In your case, with original 60s single-pane units, hon...
RE: If your cabin could talk: windows that keep out the howling wind
That lines up with my experience - function over form. The plastic kits do block drafts, but I found the adhesive can peel if the window trim is even a little dusty or cold. If you’ve got pets or kids, expect them to pok...
RE: Turning old windows into a cool wall display - my favorite trick yet
I’ve dealt with those drafty old windows too. Tried replacing the sash cords and adding weatherstripping where I could, but honestly, it only helped a little. Heavy curtains do the job but, like you said, it’s not great ...
RE: Finally upgraded to Kolbe windows, anyone else notice a difference?
Agreed, pane count alone isn't the whole story. Frame material and sealing quality often have a bigger impact on noise and thermal comfort. When we upgraded, I noticed a significant improvement, but we also invested in h...
