RE: Trimming window openings without wrecking your walls
I’ve run into this a lot, especially with older homes where the plaster is unpredictable and sometimes downright fragile. Adding new trim directly over old plaster is definitely possible, but you want to be careful about...
RE: Which is less of a headache: full-frame vs. insert fiberglass window installs?
Matching stain on new trim is a pain, especially with older oak - grain just never lines up the same, no matter how much you tweak the color. I’ve had better luck color-matching with gel stains, but you still see it if y...
RE: Quick tricks for holding a cracked window together?
Yeah, that old silicone is stubborn - sometimes feels like it’s fused to the trim for good. The report cover idea is pretty resourceful in a pinch. Just a heads up, I’ve seen folks accidentally trap moisture under those ...
RE: Tried out black window trim - totally changed my curb appeal
Honestly, as long as your window openings are square and you get precise measurements, matte black trim is pretty straightforward to install. The main issue I see is when older homes have settled - sometimes the frames a...
RE: Fastest way to get old windows out without a mess?

RE: Why is spotting rotten window frames so tricky?
Paint is notorious for masking underlying rot, especially on older wood frames. Even seasoned inspectors can miss it if the surface looks intact and there’s no visible swelling or cracking. I’ve seen plenty of cases wher...
RE: Comparing double vs triple pane fiberglass windows for keeping the cold out
That’s spot on about the backer rod and caulk - honestly, I’ve seen more air leaks from poorly detailed perimeters than from the glass itself. People get so fixated on the window spec sheet, but if you don’t have a conti...
RE: WINDOW WARS: WHICH PANES WOULD YOU PICK FOR A HAUNTED HOUSE?
Heavy curtains and cellular shades definitely provide a noticeable improvement in insulation, more so than decorative films. From a technical standpoint, the real game changer is going from single-pane to double- or trip...
