RE: CURTAIN CONUNDRUM: CAN FABRIC REALLY FIGHT THE COLD?
That “still air pocket” only works well if the curtains actually fit the window: - Floor-length panels that reach close to the sill or floor do more than short curtains. - Mounting the rod wider than the frame and overl...

RE: Quick tricks for holding a cracked window together?
- Packing tape and a hair dryer - solid combo. I’ve seen folks try electrical tape too, but that stuff turns brittle in the cold and you end up with a sticky mess. Not a fan unless it’s all you’ve got in the junk drawer....
RE: Simonton vs. Andersen windows - worth the extra cash?
- Full-frame replacements usually do a better job with drafts and condensation, especially in older homes where the frames are warped or out of square. - Andersen’s price isn’t just for the name - hardware and finish d...
RE: Would You Go With Classic Wood Windows Or Modern Vinyl After Swapping Yours Out?
Ha, I hear you - spent way too many weekends wrestling with peeling paint myself. Switched to vinyl on my split-level a while back. Zero regrets for the back and sides, but yeah, the front’s got that “plastic grin” if yo...

Totally get where you’re coming from on the vinyl vs. fiberglass debate. Seen plenty of “cheap vinyl” turn into brittle, sad little window skeletons after a couple rough winters. That freeze-thaw cycle just eats them up....
RE: Did you know window boxes used to be called "window gardens"?
- Gotta say, I’m with you on the gravel. Nailed it - tried that trick in my own window boxes last year and all I got was a muddy mess... plus a few confused earthworms. - Coir liners are steep, but at least they don’t r...
RE: Trying To Make Sense Of All These Green Building Labels - Is It Just Me Or Is It Overwhelming?
Yeah, I’ve seen buyers get excited about triple-pane windows or fancy Energy Star stickers… until they see the utility bill and realize the “performance” doesn’t always match the label. Honestly, half the time folks just...
