I tried opaque stains on my deck railing a few years back, thinking they'd be the perfect middle ground. Honestly, they looked fantastic at first—gave that nice solid color but still let the wood grain peek through a bit. But after about three winters, I noticed some peeling and flaking in spots exposed to heavy sun and moisture. Not terrible, but definitely needed touch-ups sooner than I'd hoped. Might've been my prep work though... sanding thoroughly is crucial no matter what you use.
