How I soundproofed my old windows with laminated glass (and what I’d do differently)

I get where you’re coming from, but I actually had a different experience with weatherstripping—though maybe it’s down to the type or how bad the gaps were. On my 1950s place, the foam tape didn’t do much, but when I switched to silicone tube weatherseal (the kind that compresses), it cut down both drafts and some of the sharper outside noises. Not a miracle fix, just enough to notice. Laminated glass is definitely a bigger leap, but I think sometimes people overlook how much those little air leaks add up. Still, nothing short of a full window replacement seems to really tackle sirens or loud voices. There’s always that one neighbor’s dog…

Totally agree here. I tried the silicone tube stuff too and honestly, it’s way better than the cheap foam. Still, when a garbage truck rolls by, nothing short of double-paned or laminated glass really cuts it. I did notice, though, that after sealing the gaps, my old sash windows don’t rattle as much in the wind. That was a nice bonus. The dog next door still gets through, but at least I’m not heating the whole neighborhood anymore.
