Do impact windows matter if the garage door is the weak link?

Impact-rated windows can protect their openings from windborne debris, but I’m unsure how much confidence to place in them if an attached garage has a door without a comparable rating. How should someone check whether a garage door is rated for wind pressure, debris impact, or both? Those seem like separate protections, and I don’t want to assume one rating covers the other.

Would local code requirements or an assessment by a qualified building professional be the right way to judge the garage opening alongside the windows? I’m interested in how people evaluate the whole building envelope rather than treating the windows as the only storm-protection decision.

- Check the garage door’s label and approval documents for separate evidence of wind-pressure capacity and debris-impact testing. A pressure rating alone doesn’t establish impact protection. If the documents confirm pressure resistance but not impact performance, don’t count the door as providing both protections; have a qualified local professional assess what protection the opening needs.

Local code is the right reference, but it won’t be one blanket requirement for every garage opening. The required wind-pressure capacity depends on the design pressures for the property, while debris-impact protection may also be required if the location falls within a designated windborne-debris region. The locally adopted code and amendments determine which apply, so I’d check those for the specific property rather than infer the requirement from the windows. A pressure rating by itself doesn’t meet a separate impact requirement.
