I totally get where you’re coming from on the “trust us” thing. Every time a contractor says that, I want to ask for a checklist instead. Do you ever wonder if some of them skip the details just because most people don’t know to ask? When I did my windows, I actually caught one crew about to install without flashing tape—turns out it wasn’t even in their quote. Makes me wonder how many folks end up with leaks years later and never connect the dots. Detailed quotes definitely help, but I still worry about what’s hidden behind my old siding... how much is just out of sight, out of mind?

I get why you’d feel that way, but do you think maybe we’re all a bit too suspicious sometimes? I mean, yeah, some crews cut corners—no doubt about that. But I’ve also had a couple of contractors who were pretty upfront, even pointing out stuff I wouldn’t have noticed, like rotting sheathing or outdated insulation behind my siding. Maybe it’s partly about finding the right people, not just nitpicking every single detail?

That said, I do wonder how much is “out of sight, out of mind.” When I had my 1950s place resided, I was convinced there’d be horror stories hiding underneath, but it was mostly fine. Makes me question if we sometimes overthink what’s hidden in the walls. Or is that just me being lucky? Hard to know where to draw the line between healthy skepticism and unnecessary stress...

- Definitely get the “out of sight, out of mind” thing. Most leaks I’ve seen don’t show up until way later—usually after the warranty’s toast.
- Not every wall is hiding a nightmare, but I’ve seen enough weird stuff (like a squirrel nest behind new vinyl) that I always check twice.
- Good contractors make all the difference. Still, I’d rather be a little paranoid than pay for repairs down the road.
- Sometimes you get lucky… sometimes you get mystery stains on your ceiling six months later. It’s a gamble either way.

That’s the part that keeps me up at night, honestly. I’ve seen windows go in perfectly, everything sealed, and then—months later—there’s a drip in the weirdest spot. Usually it’s some flashing detail or caulk that didn’t bond right. I always tell folks to budget for a bit of exploratory work, especially in older homes. It’s not paranoia if you’ve seen what water can do behind a wall... sometimes it’s just being realistic.

Funny how it’s always the spot you least expect—like three feet from the window, nowhere near where you’d think water could travel. I’ve found that even with the best caulking, if the flashing isn’t lapped right, water finds a way. Out of curiosity, did you have any surprises once you opened up the walls, or was it a straightforward job? Sometimes I wonder if it’s worth doing a water test before closing everything up...
