How do you calculate real DIY window labor savings?

I’m trying to compare DIY installation with a contractor quote for **eight replacement openings**, roughly **three 36-by-60-inch windows and five 30-by-48-inch windows**. The plan is still undecided between **insert replacements** and a **full-frame installation**, since the existing frames and exterior trim may affect both labor and materials.

The tempting calculation is simply:

**contractor installation charge minus DIY labor = savings**

But I’m not sure that reflects the real total. I’d want to price or confirm all of these before deciding:

- Rental or purchase of a window suction lifter, oscillating tool, pry tools, ladders, and any exterior-access equipment
- Permit fees and inspection requirements
- Delivery charges, especially if the windows arrive separately from trim or flashing materials
- Dump fees or a dumpster for the old windows, packaging, and damaged framing
- Helper time for carrying and setting larger units
- Flashing, shims, low-expansion foam, sealants, fasteners, insulation, and replacement trim
- Repairs if removing an old frame exposes rot or water damage
- The cost of correcting a unit that has to be removed and reinstalled

For anyone who has compared the two, what did you include in your DIY total, and did the savings still look worthwhile after the extras? I’m especially interested in how the answer changed between inserts and full-frame work.
