How do you usually fix stuck or squeaky window locks?

Quick poll time: when your window hardware acts up (like sticky locks, handles that won’t turn, etc.), do you try to fix it yourself, call a pro, or just ignore it until it gets worse? I’m definitely guilty of the last one sometimes…

I used to just let stuff like that slide, but after moving into our first place last year, I realized how quickly a sticky lock can turn into a window you just stop opening altogether. I tried fixing one myself—YouTube tutorial, WD-40, the whole nine yards—but ended up snapping the handle clean off. That was a fun call to the hardware store… I’m curious, has anyone actually managed to fix these without making it worse? Or is it just me who seems to escalate things?

I can relate to this a bit too well. When we first moved in, one of our bedroom windows had a latch that barely budged. I figured it was just old paint or dirt, so I tried some WD-40 and gently worked it back and forth. It did loosen up, but then the mechanism inside started sticking worse than before—turns out there was some corrosion I couldn’t see. I ended up having to take the whole thing apart and order a replacement lock online. Sometimes those DIY fixes work, but other times… yeah, you just end up with more parts on your hands than you started with.

Funny how a “quick fix” can sometimes spiral into a full-on hardware project. I’ve lost count of how many times I thought a little lube or a twist of the screwdriver would do the trick, only to end up with the entire lock mechanism in pieces on the table. WD-40 is a classic go-to, but honestly, it’s not always the magic bullet folks think—especially with older windows where corrosion has had years to settle in. I’ve found that once rust or gunk gets inside the moving parts, you’re usually better off just biting the bullet and replacing the whole latch.

That said, I have had a few wins with white lithium grease instead of WD-40—it sticks around longer and doesn’t attract as much dust. Still, there’s always that risk you’ll break something brittle in the process... and then you’re off to hunt down some obscure part online. Never fails that it’s backordered or twice what you expected to pay.

Honestly, sometimes I wonder if these old windows are just testing my patience on purpose.

WD-40 gets all the hype, but I’ve had similar luck with white lithium grease, especially for those old steel latches where the moving parts just grind against each other. The trick is getting the stuff actually inside the mechanism—sometimes you have to take the lock apart, which is always a gamble with brittle plastic or corroded screws. I totally relate to the “quick fix” turning into a whole afternoon project. Last summer, I tried to loosen up a sticky sash lock in our 1950s sunroom, and the next thing I knew, the entire lock assembly was in pieces and half the paint was chipped off around it. Ended up ordering a replacement online (and yeah, it cost way more than I thought it would).

One thing I’ve started doing is putting a towel under the work area and taking photos as I go—makes it easier to remember how everything fits back together. For stuck locks specifically, I’ll usually start with a dry brush to clear out dust and cobwebs, then use a little rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip to clean out old gunk before applying any lubricant. If it’s really seized, sometimes tapping gently with a rubber mallet can help break things loose, but obviously you risk snapping something if it’s already fragile.

Honestly, sometimes I think the window companies made these things intentionally hard to service so we’d just give up and buy new windows. But when you live in an older house, replacing all the hardware isn’t exactly cheap or easy—half the time the screw holes don’t line up with modern parts anyway. Still, I get a weird satisfaction when I manage to bring an old lock back to life instead of tossing it.

That’s the story of my life with this old place. I’ve had the same battle with those aluminum slider locks—nothing seems to keep them smooth for long. Tried silicone spray, graphite, even a tiny dab of Vaseline once (not recommended, it just collected more dust). The best luck I’ve had is actually just taking the whole slider out and giving the tracks a deep clean with a toothbrush and soapy water, then drying everything out before putting it back together. Even then, it’s usually good for a season and then back to sticking.

Funny thing, I found one lock was catching because of a tiny dent in the track. Ended up using a wooden dowel and gentle pressure to flatten it out, which helped more than any lubricant. Makes me wonder if sometimes it’s less about grease and more about alignment or wear over time.

Have you ever tried adjusting the alignment on those sliders? I’m starting to think that’s half the battle, but I’m never sure if I’m making things better or just setting myself up for another headache down the road...

Alignment’s a sneaky one—people always jump to lubricants but if the sash is even slightly out of square, nothing’s going to slide right. I’ve had jobs where just tweaking the adjustment screws at the top or bottom of the frame made a world of difference. The trouble is, sometimes those screws are painted over or stripped, and then it’s a whole new can of worms. Deep cleaning the tracks definitely helps, but if you’re fighting warping from old wood or settling, you might just be chasing your tail. In my experience, getting the window as plumb as possible before messing with locks saves a lot of headache in the long run.

- When I’m called out for stuck locks, my checklist usually goes:
- Check if the window’s square (use a little torpedo level or just eyeball if it’s obviously off)
- Look for paint buildup or caulk gumming up the works—sometimes it’s just years of touch-ups
- Adjustment screws—if you can find ‘em under all the paint. If they’re stripped, I’ll try a rubber band trick or worst case, drill ‘em out and replace

- Cleaning tracks is always a good move, but like you said, if the wood’s warped or the frame’s settled, you’re in for a battle. Had a 1920s bungalow job last fall—window looked fine until you tried to lock it, then suddenly you’re putting your back into it. Ended up having to shim one corner and sand down the meeting rail. Not glamorous work, but it did the trick.

- One thing I’ll add—sometimes those cheap aftermarket locks folks pick up at the hardware store just don’t fit right. If alignment’s good and it still sticks, I’ll check if the lock itself is binding or if it’s just not meant for that model.

- Honestly, I wish there was a magic fix for warped sashes. Sometimes you’re stuck (no pun intended) with what you’ve got unless you want to start replacing frames.

—man, that hits home. I’ve had to chip away at so much old paint just to get a lock moving again. I’ll add: sometimes those old brass locks just need a little graphite powder instead of silicone. Not a miracle, but it helps if the alignment’s decent.

I get the whole graphite powder thing, but I’ve actually had mixed luck with it, especially in the windows upstairs. Maybe it’s just my house (built in the 60s, so everything’s a little wonky), but I found graphite just made a mess without really fixing the sticking. I tried it on a sash lock and ended up with black streaks on the paint, and the lock still felt stiff. Could be user error, I guess.

What’s worked better for me is just taking the lock off completely and cleaning out all the gunk—paint chips, dust, whatever’s built up in there. I use a little rubbing alcohol and a toothbrush, then a tiny dab of petroleum jelly on the moving parts. Not sure if that’s “by the book,” but it’s kept things moving for about a year now. Haven’t noticed any issues with buildup or anything.

I do get the point about alignment, though. If the lock’s not lined up, nothing really helps. I had to actually sand down part of the window frame on one to get it to latch properly again. Took way longer than I expected, but at least now I don’t have to muscle it shut every time.

Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there. Graphite might be the classic choice, but sometimes a little cleaning and some old-school elbow grease does the trick. Maybe it depends on the lock type or how much paint is caked on...
