- Definitely agree about not skipping the basics. I learned that the hard way—spent an entire weekend layering up film and weatherstripping, only to realize the bottom sash on one window was warped. No amount of tape or plastic was going to fix that draft.
- In my old place, most of the cold air actually came in around the window frame itself, not through the glass. Ended up using rope caulk to seal some hairline gaps between the trim and plaster. It’s not pretty, but it worked until I could budget for new windows.
- Quick tip: if you’ve got double-hungs, check those meeting rails. Sometimes a little adjustment or tightening up the locks helps more than any amount of foam strips.
- Outlet gaskets are underrated, for sure. I’ve also had luck with spray foam in the basement rim joists—made a bigger difference than anything I did upstairs.
- Not every fix is permanent or perfect. Sometimes it’s just about stacking a few small solutions and being okay with “good enough” for now… especially if you’re renting or saving up for a bigger upgrade.
