Yeah, the mold thing freaks me out a bit... just bought my first place and now I'm paranoid about what's lurking behind the walls, haha. Do you guys think certain window types or materials are more prone to sneaky leaks than others? Or is it mostly about installation quality and upkeep? Still figuring this homeowner stuff out, so any insight helps.
Had a similar paranoia when I moved into my place—turns out my fancy double-pane windows were leaking air like crazy because of sloppy installation. Switched installers, sealed properly, and problem solved. Quality install beats fancy materials every time, imo.
Had a similar issue at my old apartment—thought I was being super energy-conscious, but turns out my windows were basically acting like vents. Even after sealing, I realized regular checks matter too. Fancy windows or not, maintenance seems key to efficiency... learned that the hard way.

Yeah, totally agree—maintenance is often overlooked. Curious though, does anyone find seasonal checks more effective, or do you just inspect whenever you notice drafts or issues popping up?
Seasonal checks definitely help catch issues early, especially before winter hits. Learned from experience that waiting until drafts appear usually means you're already losing efficiency... Regular inspections save headaches down the line.
I usually do a quick check twice a year—spring and fall. Learned the hard way after ignoring a small crack in the caulking around one window... ended up with water damage inside the wall. Not fun. Now I just do a quick visual inspection, run my hand around the frames to feel for drafts, and clean out any dirt or debris from the tracks. Takes maybe an hour tops, but saves a ton of hassle later. I don't think you need to go overboard, but catching stuff early definitely beats dealing with bigger problems down the road.

Twice a year feels like overkill to me. Honestly, I get why you'd be cautious after dealing with water damage (been there, it sucks...), but I've gone years without checking my windows and haven't had any major issues yet. Maybe it's luck, or maybe some houses just need more attention than others? Guess I'll find out the hard way eventually, lol.
