Does a factory-applied window finish change long-term care?

When comparing replacement windows, how much should I weigh a factory-applied exterior paint or coating against a finish applied in the field after installation? I’m not sure whether that difference mainly affects appearance and how easily the surface can be touched up, or whether it can mean a meaningful difference in durability or upkeep.

I’d want to separate the finish from the frame material itself, since a coating doesn’t make the underlying material something else. What specifications or manufacturer guidance would you ask for about the finish, and what care or refinishing is recommended over time?

Since you’re trying to compare what “durable” means in practice, I’d also ask whether the finish warranty sets a limit for color or gloss change, and whether it excludes damage from particular cleaners or maintenance methods. Those details can tell you more about both expected aging and which routine care might void coverage.
