I tried the whole “moody color” thing a couple years back when charcoal gray was everywhere. I painted our dining room—figured it’d be chic and grown-up. It did look sharp for about a week, but then I started noticing every single fingerprint, cat hair, and random smudge. We have two kids and a dog, so let’s just say it wasn’t exactly low-maintenance.

Lighting was another headache. Even with the blinds wide open, the room felt like I was eating dinner in a basement bar. My husband joked he needed a flashlight to find the salt. We swapped bulbs for brighter ones and even added a mirror, but honestly, it always felt kind of heavy in there. Not exactly the vibe I was going for.

I see the appeal of all-black or super dark rooms in magazines—they look stunning when styled perfectly and photographed just right. But real life isn’t a photoshoot. Unless you’re okay with cleaning constantly or you don’t mind things looking a little rough around the edges, it’s probably not worth it in high-traffic spots.

Accent walls are more forgiving. We ended up repainting three walls back to white and leaving just one dark, which somehow made the whole space feel bigger again—plus way less cleaning.

Maybe if you live somewhere sunny year-round or don’t have pets/kids running wild, it could work better? For me, though, I’ll admire those all-black interiors from afar... preferably with good lighting and zero pet hair on my couch.
