Had to manually pull them for a week... felt like I’d time traveled back to the 90s.

That’s exactly my worry with all these “smart” upgrades. We put in those fancy programmable thermostats a while back, and when the power flickered, it reset everything—took me ages to figure out how to reprogram it. I do like the energy savings, but sometimes I just want something that works no matter what. There’s something to be said for a good old pull cord or twist of the wrist.

I totally get that feeling—our old house had these ancient crank windows, and honestly, they never failed me. But when we moved in here, I got all excited about smart blinds and programmable stuff. It’s cool most days, but last winter during a storm, the power went out and suddenly nothing worked. Had to prop the blinds up with a broom handle until I got it sorted. Does anyone else worry about what happens if all this tech goes down? Or is it just part of the trade-off for saving on the energy bills?

- Totally relate to the broom-handle fix. Had a similar moment with my smart thermostat—once the WiFi was down, I couldn’t adjust anything remotely.

Yep, backup plans are on my mind a lot.
- The energy savings are real, but I do miss the simplicity of old-school hardware sometimes.
- For me, it’s about balance—keeping some manual options around just in case.
- Not sure the trade-off is always worth it, especially during outages... but when it works, it’s hard to go back.
