What if you had to pick curtains for every room but could only use one fabric?

I tried full blackout in my old apartment and it just felt off, especially during the day.

Not sure I totally agree that “good enough” is always best when it comes to curtains, especially if you’re dealing with rooms that get blasted by afternoon sun. I tried lined linen in my bedroom, and even with the lining, it just didn’t block enough light for me to sleep well. Curious—has anyone found a single fabric that actually works for both privacy and serious light control? Or is it always a compromise?

I get what you mean—

—but I’m kinda picky about both privacy and blocking heat. I tried a thick cotton twill once, and it was decent for keeping things cool and private, but still let in more light than I wanted. Has anyone actually found a fabric that doesn’t make the room feel like a cave but still keeps the heat out? Or do you just have to pick your battles with this stuff?

I’ve wrestled with this exact thing. My living room faces west, so in the summer it’s like a greenhouse if I don’t get the curtains right. Tried blackout panels once—awesome for blocking heat, but yeah, total cave vibes during the day. Ended up layering: a lighter linen for daytime, then heavier drapes I can pull over when the sun’s brutal. Honestly, I don’t think there’s a magic fabric that nails everything unless you’re okay with some compromise. If you find one, let me know... I’d love to stop playing musical curtains.
