Windows That Save Energy - What If You Had to DIY It?
Discussion options
I've been thinking lately, um, what if you suddenly had to make your own window coverings to keep your house warm in winter and cool in summer? Like imagine stores ran out or something weird like that. Would you go old-school with heavy curtains or try something creative like bubble wrap (I heard it works, but sounds kinda sketchy)? Curious how people would handle this kinda scenario...

Bubble wrap sounds fun til your cat decides it's a midnight snack... speaking from experience here. Honestly, I'd probably go with blankets or quilts - easy to hang, decent insulation, and bonus points for cozy vibes. Bubble wrap might insulate, but aesthetics? Questionable at best.
Blankets or quilts seem like the more practical choice, especially if appearance matters. Wouldn’t the fit around the window edges matter as much as the material, though? Even a thick quilt can lose a lot of its benefit if cold air slips in around the sides or bottom. I’d use a tension rod or hook-and-loop tape to hold it close to the frame, while still leaving a small gap from heaters and vents for safety.
