Anyone actually managed to clear up cloudy window panes at home?

Yeah, those “defogging” fixes never really last, in my experience. Swapping out just the glass is the way to go if you want it done right, but you’re not kidding about the weight. I’ve pulled a few old double panes where I had to call in backup - almost threw my back out once trying to muscle one out solo. It’s wild how much of a difference it makes with drafts and heat, though. It’s not cheap upfront, but you save on heating for sure.

I totally get what you mean about the “defogging” stuff not holding up. I tried one of those kits a while back and, honestly, it looked okay for maybe a month before the cloudiness crept right back in. Swapping the glass was a pain (and yeah, those double panes are no joke - my neighbor had to help me get one out of the frame), but the difference in how the room felt after was wild. Less drafty, way quieter, and I noticed my heat didn’t kick on as much last winter.

Do you feel like the upfront cost was worth it after seeing your energy bills? I’ve heard mixed things - some folks say it pays off in just a couple years, others say it takes longer. I’m curious if you noticed a big change right away, or if it took a while to balance out. Either way, props for tackling it yourself… those windows are beasts.

That’s exactly what happened here - I swapped out two big panes last fall and the change was immediate. The up-front hit stung a bit, but my heating bill dropped by about 15% over the winter, which surprised me. Honestly, I’m hoping it keeps trending that way, but I figure it’ll take maybe three years to actually “pay off.” Still, just not having to deal with the foggy look every morning has been worth it for my sanity.

I tried the DIY defog kits a couple years back - honestly, they didn’t do much except leave streaks and make me more annoyed. Ended up biting the bullet and replacing the worst panes last spring. The difference is night and day, both for looks and drafts. Not cheap, but I got tired of wiping condensation every morning... plus, my living room actually stays warm now. If you’re on the fence, I’d say replacement is worth it in the long run.
