RE: Cellular shades vs. heavy curtains: which keeps the house warmer?
Not gonna lie, I’m still a bit skeptical about cellulars being the clear winner. I tried some on a couple windows but honestly, our thick wool curtains (with a magnetic strip sewn into the edges) actually felt warmer to ...
RE: Window Swaps on a Shoestring: Saw This in the News
Yeah, the tape residue from those film kits is the worst. I tried them one winter in my 1920s place and swore never again... they helped a bit but I was constantly re-sticking corners that came loose. I ended up making m...
RE: Swapping out old window handles - worth it for the style boost?
Funny how one tiny misalignment can make you feel like you’re camping indoors. I’ve had the same thing happen - thought I did everything right, but the draft found its way in anyway. Those silicone seals do help, but I s...
RE: Regretting my window swap? Thoughts on vinyl replacements
Had the same thing happen with a couple of my upstairs windows about two years in - condensation between the panes, just like you’re describing. Turns out, the installer didn’t fully seat one of the units, so the seal fa...
RE: Anyone else stuck upgrading to triple-pane windows because of new regs?
Yeah, I ran into the same thing when I redid my windows last fall. Triple-pane sounded like overkill at first, but once I dug into the science, it actually made sense - especially for keeping the inside glass warmer. Con...
RE: Street noise driving me nuts - storm windows or acoustic glass?
Yeah, acoustic glass can be a game changer. I tried storm windows first, and they're decent for drafts and insulation, but for noise...meh. Ended up installing acoustic laminated glass in the home office - massive improv...
RE: Window letting in cold air - any quick fixes?
Good call on checking behind the trim - I had the same issue a couple winters back. Thought I was losing my mind after redoing the weatherstripping twice. Foam insulation behind the casing was the real fix, made a huge d...
RE: Easy ways to keep your windows from aging too fast
I had a similar experience with the cracked-window method. Thought it was a clever trick at first, but quickly realized it wasn't practical for colder months. I mean, stepping out of a hot shower into icy air is just bru...
RE: Big windows vs heating bills - worth it?
I've had thermal curtains up for a couple years now, and while they do help cut down on drafts, I've noticed the biggest difference when pairing them with weatherstripping around the window frames. Big windows are awesom...
RE: Windows that survive thin air and chilly temps
Totally agree on the window upgrades - made a huge difference at my place too. One thing I'd add is that proper ventilation matters a ton. I installed a decent bathroom exhaust fan and started actually using the kitchen ...
