RE: Unexpected challenges of putting in windows off the grid
I’ve put in a few interior storm panels over the years, mostly out of necessity since replacing every window just wasn’t in the budget. For my 1950s place, they actually helped more than fancy spacers ever did, at least ...
RE: Getting approved for window financing: how strict are they really?
I’ve run into this too - sometimes they want receipts, stickers, serial numbers, even the packaging. What’s worked for me is snapping photos of everything as soon as it’s installed. I toss the rest, but at least I’ve got...
RE: Why is taking out old windows such a pain?
I hear you on the mystery caulk - mine had some kind of rock-hard putty under the paint that laughed at my heat gun. Ended up using a multi-tool with a thin blade to work along the stops, then tapped the putty knife in g...
RE: Desert house dilemma: windows that don’t melt or warp?
I’ve been through the window rodeo more times than I care to admit - desert sun just eats through everything eventually. Vinyl was my first mistake. Looked great for about a year, then it started to sag and stick, especi...

RE: Window choices when living way up high
I've had similar experiences with automated skylights, and while they're convenient, I agree they can be finicky. If you're living way up high and maintenance is a hassle, I'd suggest going with a simpler hinged skylight...
RE: Windows that survive thin air and chilly temps
I've noticed something similar over the years. Coated windows can be great initially, but harsh weather really does a number on them. If you're looking for durability in colder climates, I've found that simpler double-pa...
RE: Easy ways to keep your windows from aging too fast
Another thing that helps is applying the film when the window's cool - like early morning or evening. Heat makes those bubbles way worse. Learned that the hard way after wasting half a roll of film...
RE: Storm-proof windows and a surprise insurance discount
Same here, noise hasn't been a big deal. When we upgraded our windows, I did notice a slight whistle during really gusty storms, but nothing distracting. One thing I'd add - if you're hearing more wind noise than expecte...
