Why is outside noise STILL getting through my windows?

Ever notice any moisture build-up after sealing? That’s the one thing I always double-check, especially on older brick houses.

That’s a solid point. I’ve been a bit paranoid about trapping moisture since I sealed up my own windows last fall. Didn’t see any condensation yet, but I’m not convinced it won’t show up later. Older houses seem to have all sorts of hidden airflow paths—I’m still finding them. The foam helps with noise, but sometimes I wonder if it’s just masking a bigger ventilation issue.

- For me, the noise didn’t really drop off until I added heavier curtains. Foam alone barely helped.
- Maybe it’s more about the window glass or frames letting sound through than ventilation? My place is 1950s and there are so many weird gaps I never expected.
- Haven’t noticed moisture yet either... but I’m keeping an eye out, just in case.

That’s been my experience too—old frames are sneaky. I tried foam, weatherstripping, and even caulk, but the real difference came when I swapped out a single-pane for double glazing. The frame itself was still a weak point though. Anyone ever try those acrylic window inserts? Curious if they actually help with both noise and drafts, or if it’s just a bandaid for old windows.

Those acrylic inserts are interesting—I’ve installed them for a few folks in older homes, and honestly, they’re not magic, but they can help. They basically add a second layer, which cuts some of the noise and stops a bit of the draft, but if your frames are warped or there’s air leaking around the sashes, you’ll still get sound sneaking in. In my experience, you’ll notice more improvement with street noise than low-frequency stuff like trucks or bass.

One thing I always wonder: have you checked the sill and meeting rails for gaps? Sometimes it’s not even the glass but those funky little spaces where the frame meets the wall. I’ve seen people spend a fortune on inserts or triple glazing, only to realize later that air is just whistling through old weight pockets or loose trim.

Curious—if you tap around your window frame on a windy day, do you feel any air movement? That’s usually my telltale sign there’s more going on than just thin glass.

But I’ll be honest, in my place (built 1970s, nothing fancy), even after caulking every visible seam and stuffing insulation anywhere I could reach, the noise still found its way in. For me, it was less about air leaks and more about the actual window construction. The single-pane glass just doesn’t block much. I tried those acrylic inserts too (the magnetic kind), hoping they’d be a game-changer... they helped a bit, but honestly, it wasn’t dramatic.

What surprised me was how much of the sound seemed to come right through the glass itself, especially higher-pitched stuff like sirens or people talking outside. Sealing up the frame made a difference for wind and cold, but not so much for noise. Maybe my frames were just in decent shape to start with, but I didn’t get that “night and day” effect some folks talk about.

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned much: sometimes sound travels through walls or even vents near your windows. In my living room, there’s a vent below the window that seemed to funnel street noise straight inside. Taping over it as a test actually quieted things down more than any window fix did.

I guess what I’m saying is—sometimes you can do everything right around the window itself and still have noise issues because of other weak spots nearby, or just because old windows are what they are. Wish there was a one-size-fits-all answer for this stuff...

Couldn’t agree more—single-pane is basically a drumhead for noise. I’ve seen folks spend a fortune on caulking and still get woken up by garbage trucks. In my last apartment (built in the 60s), I swapped out a bedroom window for a double-pane laminated glass unit, and the difference was wild... but only in that room. The living room, with original glass and a vent nearby, was still loud as ever. It’s honestly amazing how much vents and even thin wall sections can sabotage your efforts. Sometimes, unless you go all-in on both new windows and dealing with those “hidden” pathways, you’re just fighting an uphill battle.

You nailed it—single-pane glass just isn’t built for blocking noise, no matter how much caulk you throw at the frame. Even with upgraded windows, if you've got vents or thin walls nearby, sound will find its way in. It really is a whole-system issue, not just the window itself. Upgrading one room at a time helps, but unless you address those weak spots too, you’ll always have some noise sneaking through.

Yep, 100%. I swapped out my old windows for double-pane last fall—thought I was a genius, but turns out my ancient wall vents are basically megaphones for street noise. Even the tiniest gaps around outlets can make a difference. It’s wild how sound finds every weak spot. Sometimes I wonder if the noise just teleports in...

Yeah, I learned the hard way it’s not just about the windows. I had a contractor point out that my door seals were basically useless, and sound was just leaking in there. Might be worth checking those too. It’s always something...

That’s a really common oversight. Door seals, especially on older homes, can break down or just never have been that effective to start with. Even if you’ve got top-notch windows, if the door sweeps or weatherstripping are worn out, you’ll get a ton of noise sneaking in around the gaps. I’ve seen cases where people spend thousands on new glazing but skip right over the big air leaks at the threshold.

It’s not just doors and windows either—sometimes outlets on exterior walls, mail slots, even pet doors can be weak points for sound transmission. Air gaps are basically highways for noise. If you want to get really thorough, there are acoustic sealants and gaskets made specifically for this kind of thing. Not glamorous work, but it makes a difference.

Funny thing is, sometimes people go all-in on triple-pane glass thinking it’ll fix everything, but if the rest of the envelope isn’t tight, you’re only halfway there...
