Saw a story about city dwellers using window hacks to block street noise—anyone tried these?

Just read this article about folks in big cities using everything from thick curtains to DIY acrylic panels to quiet down their apartments. Some even went for window inserts that apparently make a huge difference, but they’re kinda pricey. I’m wondering if any of you have tried these tricks or found something that actually works without breaking the bank? My old house has those thin single-pane windows and it’s like living next to a freeway some nights. Curious if any of these solutions are worth it, or if it’s all hype?

Tried a few things myself—my place is from the 50s, single-pane windows everywhere, and the street noise was brutal. I started with heavy blackout curtains, which helped a bit with both noise and drafts, but honestly, didn’t do much for the lower frequencies like truck engines. Last year I tried some DIY acrylic panels mounted with magnetic strips. Not exactly pretty, but way cheaper than window inserts and surprisingly effective at dulling the worst of it. Still not total silence, but enough to get some sleep. Curious if anyone’s found an affordable fix that actually tackles bass sounds…
